Does freezing coconut oil damage it?

Coconut oil has been all the rage in recent years, touted as a miracle product that can do everything from curing acne to promoting weight loss. But what happens when you stick it in the freezer? Does freezing coconut oil damage it? Let’s dig into this chilly conundrum.

What is Coconut Oil?

First things first – let’s talk about what we’re dealing with here. Coconut oil comes from the flesh of coconuts and is high in saturated fat. It’s been used for centuries in cooking, cosmetics, and medicine.

Types of Coconut Oil

There are two main types of coconut oil: refined and unrefined.

Refined Coconut Oil

Refined coconut oil has been bleached and deodorized to remove impurities and increase its shelf life.

Unrefined Coconut Oil

Unrefined or “virgin” (cue awkward giggles) coconut oil hasn’t gone through that process, making it more nutritious but also more prone to spoilage.

Uses of Coconut Oil

People use coconut oil for everything nowadays – baking, frying, moisturizing their hair… Some even put it on their pets! Here are just a few ways people like to use this versatile ingredient:

  • Cooking
  • Baking
  • Skincare
  • Haircare
  • Pet care

Now that we’ve got the basics out of the way, let’s move on to our burning question…

Does Freezing Damage Coconut Oil?

To be honest – if someone told me they freeze their cooking oils I would wonder how much spare time they have; cold weather may shrink them off – LITERALLY. So does the same rule apply here?

The answer is no; freezing doesn’t really damage coconut oil, BUT there are some things you should know before tossing your jar into sub-zero temps.

When you freeze coconut oil, it solidifies and can become grainy or clumpy. This is completely normal and doesn’t affect the quality of the oil. Just let it come back to room temperature before using.

Storing Coconut Oil

Now that we’ve covered freezing, let’s talk about storing coconut oil in general. Proper storage is key when it comes to maximizing shelf life and preserving flavor.

Shelf Life

Coconut oil has a long shelf life – up to 2 years if stored properly!

But how do you know if your coconut oil has gone bad? Look for these signs:

  • Sour, rancid smell
  • Cloudy or discolored appearance
  • Musky or moldy odor

Where Should You Keep Coconut Oil?

The best place to store your precious coconut oil is in a cool, dry place away from sunlight (No – not directly on top of your fridge – go put Fido’s toys back). If you have refined (thought we forgot didn’t cha) coconut oil, feel free to keep it in the cupboard at room temperature.

However; unrefined coconut oils are more delicate due their natural characteristics/expiry factor so they should be kept below 75°F/24°C . You may store them inside cupboards but make sure they’re as far away from appliances/generators o any heat source as possible!

If you live in a hot climate where temperatures regularly exceed 75°F/24°C , storing unrefined coconuts inside your fridge door will work wonders & prevent spoilage/mold etc..

Benefits of Freezing Your Coconut Oil

Sure we spoke why/how freezing shouldn’t damage your precious content BUT here’s what happens when you freeze it:
– It takes longer for the “rancy” process i.e turning into sour milk form
– Longer time between purchase and whenever use stage
– Some say cold-wallowing improves the superfood’s antioxidants, I only see benefits if you’re attempting to put some gloss on anything in 2010 that’d move.

How Long Does It Take Coconut Oil To Freeze?

Under normal circumstances, coconut oil should freeze solid within a few hours. However, this can vary depending on factors such as:

  • The temperature of your freezer
  • The container your coconut oil is stored in
  • Whether or not it’s been opened

Keep an eye on your jar; hope-and-pray & check back after two/three hours? Girrrrl bye.

Can You Refreeze Coconut Oil?

Yeah sure; No popular opinion says against refreezing! This is one of those “it depends” situations. If you’ve already used half the jar and want to refreeze it for later use, there shouldn’t be any issues with quality. BUT don’t expect consistency (all cameras point towards scrambled eggs).

Freezing coconut oil is certainly possible without affecting its overall quality. While freezing does cause changes in texture and consistency – these do not negatively affect product use outcomes!. At worst, you may find yourself having to wait a bit before being able to enjoy silky smooth spoonfuls from jars OR slick locks that smell like cookies all day. Stay frosty my friends!
