Do ulcers cause vomiting?
Are you feeling some abdominal discomfort and wondering if it’s an ulcer? Or maybe you’re experiencing bouts of vomiting but can’t figure out the culprit behind it. In this article, we delve into the correlation between ulcers and vomiting so that you can get to the root of your health issue.
What are Ulcers?
Before we start examining whether or not ulcers lead to vomiting, let’s first understand what they are. An ulcer refers to a sore or wound that develops on the inner lining of our body parts. Common types of ulcers include peptic, mouth or genital.
Types of Ulcers
There is more than one type of ulcer, but for now will focus only on peptic because when people say “ulcer” usually they mean this type:
- Peptic: They form mostly in digestive system; esophagus (esophageal), stomach (gastric) or duodenum (duodenal)
Sign and Symptoms
Ulcer symptoms vary from person-to-person depending on where it has developed.
Gastric Ulcer Symptoms
- Bloated feeling
- Belching
- Nausea (with occasional vomiting)
- Dull pain or heartburn-like sensation spreading in epigastric area around ribcage
Gastric ulcer pain often comes after eating food too quickly/greasy food/processed meat which irritates an already inflamed lining gastric mucosal by eatables like those mentioned earlier.
Duodenal Ulcer Symptoms
The following indicators indicate presence of cyst in intestines.
– Acid reflux(Food backs up through Osohpageus causing irritation )
-Sudden gnawing feelin about two hours after meal(Most common symptom)
-Night Pains(Strange sensation wakes patient at night)
Sometimes these go unnoticed as sometimes it may take time before any symptom arises.
What Causes Ulcers?
Now, to understand if ulcers cause vomiting, we need to know what factors lead to the development of an ulcer in the first place.
Ulcer-inducing Factors:
- Bacteria named helicobacter pylori
- Use of NSAIDs(Anti-inflammatory Drugs)
- Heavy alcoholic consumption
- Radiation therapy
If you find yourself experiencing any symptoms mentioned above and wondering about possible reasons behind it then best get yourself checked by a doctor because they should determine the appropriate tests required for diagnosis.
Could Ulcers Cause Vomiting?
There has been inconclusive evidence regarding whether or not ulcers can lead to vomiting. But there are certain situations where it could happen.
Duodenal Ulcer and Vomiting Relationship
Duodenal ulcers involve buildup of acid which prompts hormone production like gastrin(chiefly responsible for secretion of stomach acid) that speeds gastric empyting rates up even more resulting in excessive vomitting.
Gastric Ulcer and Vomiting Relationship
Meanwhile patients who have gastric cysts may experience nausea followed by replex contractions as their body attempts relieve pain signals originating from abdominal area inducing forceful regurgitation (reverse movement food matter back into esophagus).
Remember that constant vomitting can easily result dehydration so drink plenty fluids when this happens.Whatever be your case, consult medical professional immediately if these symptoms persist.Help is always around corner!
