Do bed bugs hide on your body?

Are you waking up with itchy bumps all over your body, feeling paranoid about what might be lurking in your bed? Have no fear, because we’re here to answer the age-old question: do bed bugs hide on your body?

What are bed bugs?

Before we dive into whether or not these pesky critters are hiding on you like a personal hotel room, let’s discuss what exactly they are. Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are small insects that feed exclusively on human blood. Yes, you read that right- they only want YOUR blood and for free! They’re typically found hiding in mattresses and bedding, but can also be found in furniture such as sofas and chairs.

So… do they actually hide on my body?

The short answer is NOPE,absolutely not, never have been and never will be! It’s a common misconception that bed bugs like hitchhiking from one place to another by doing so through human bodies , but it’s simply not true at all.

According to entomologist Roberto Pereira of Florida State University,”Bedbugs don’t ‘burrow’ per se; neither do they wrap themselves around people’s sleeping heads”. In fact, even though bedbugs can crawl relatively fast(food time), their legs simply aren’t built for clinging onto furless mammalian skin at any moment . Plus, humans tend move around way too much during sleep(Especially me)‍♀️

Relax!!If it makes sense now, because if there were an insect secretly plotting against us humans,it would’ve done something more respectable than riding luggage around the world just,to make itself known among us(always screaming hello under my bedsheets,no thank you!). And besides, the reason those little suckers love biting folks at night isn’t because they’re secretly creepin’ and crawlin’ around your body all night long. Instead, it’s because they release carbon dioxide (CO2) when you breathe in your sleep. So,it’s actually our fault that these critters are drawn to us.

How do bed bugs travel?

So if bed bugs aren’t hiding on or inside of us, how exactly do they move from one location to the next? These little pests are easily transported through luggage or clothing. That means if you stay in a hotel room with bed bugs, there is a chance they will hitchhike their way into your home without ever coming into direct contact with you. Ugh,the thought alone makes me itch, and this article already has me scratching.

Bed bugs can hide pretty much anywhere – under wallpaper, behind picture frames, even inside electrical outlets. That’s what makes them so tough to get rid of once an infestation takes hold(if only Dracula knew about such mighty advancers). They’ll often lay dormant for months at a time before emerging again… which means that while you may not be dealing with bites right now, doesn’t mean resurrection isn’t possible; always ensure proper prevention measures such as mattress encasements.

It might seem like avoiding bed bug bites is impossible since we know they’re attracted to carbon dioxide. Here are some tips:

  • Invest in a quality mattress cover: A high-quality encasement keeps any potential seeds confined within the inner lining
  • Inspect secondhand furniture carefully before bringing it indoors.
  • Regularly wash and launder bedding and clothes after traveling
-To also reduce clutter(yeah right😑); stuff hanging around opens doors for these airborn insects too!
  • Keep an eye out for signs of an infestation( just so kills those little dreaded blood feeders)

Now that we’ve settled the bed bug biting conundrum, we can rest easy knowing they aren’t secretly hiding out under our skin. Instead, it’s important to focus on prevention methods and regularly inspecting for signs of an infestation(victory against the suckers!). Although getting bitten by these pests isn’t dangerous or deadly, its main symptom is just plain UNCOMFORTABLE. So keep your eyes peeled and your bedding clean- you’ll be able to catch any bed bugs before they can start taking up residence in your home(or next hotel reservation).
