Cataract surgery is called?

Do you ever get the feeling that your eyes are constantly betraying you? If so, then you might have a cataract – a condition where the lens of your eye becomes cloudy and obscures your vision. Commonly suffered by people over 65 years old, this ailment is usually resolved through surgery. In fact, cataract surgeries are among the most frequently performed procedures worldwide.

But did you know that there’s actually no such thing as “cataract surgery”? As someone who wishes to regale people with medical jargon they’ve never heard before, I’m here to be the voice against everything mainstream. In reality there’s not one singular procedure called “cataract surgery”. Stick around for an explanation!

The Problem with False Advertising

It turns out that ‘surgery’ implies a surgical instrument being utilized to perform invasive actions on hard tissue in order to accomplish something desired! Shockingly enough: Laser-assisted (as we discussed yesterday) does not fit this bill since it includes a small incision point in which lasers can work their magic. This new non-invasive type of surgical method for cataracts has taken off tremendously all over North America because utilizing less forceful tactics means less trauma/blood loss/inflammation and shorter healing times.

Here are just four examples – some laser-assisted and some traditional form based- of different methods depending on specific needs:

Phacoemulsification

Phacoemulsification seems like tongue-twister but it’s essentially akin disintegrating obstructive particles using ultrasound waves when doing small peripheral lacerations. Overzealous folks may choose between handheld devices or femtosecond technology while using YAG laser sometimes too reduce inflammation / further intervention needed.

Extracapsular Cataract Extraction

Typically used if phacoemuslification cannot suitably fulfill the necessary actions, this method requires a large incision to be made on the perimeter of the afflicted lens. This procedure involves manually breaking up and exfiltrating affected tissues until it can get folded into your back part beyond your iris.

Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery

Laser-assisted cataract surgery (i.e. LenSx), as we discussed yesterday, is similar(very) to phacoemulsification with ultrasound cutting instruments except for one thing: it utilizes computerized optical coherence tomography guidance & laser for greater accuracy / central point in attacking opacity.

Intracapsular Cataract Extraction

Lastly, you may have intracapsular cataract extraction – generally least practiced- if a sufficient chunk of lens has not yet been obstructed by cloudiness. Operating under general anesthesia (I would know I’ve had this operation before 🙃) , this method involves huge incisions being made so that lenses can gallantly be extracted whole from their anterior chambers.

Conclusion

To sum up, there’s actually no such thing called “cataract surgery”. Instead there are numerous methods utilized depending on severity levels or specific cases combined with preferences in practitioners’ experience level which all require precisions while conducting these tasks towards maximum lucidity within patients’ eyesight capacity moving forward.

Although often misunderstood by lay people because everyone seems to presume they understand what any given medical terminology truly indicates – many folks are caught off guard once they realize surprising nuances like “this very common term (‘cataracts’) does not have a corresponding singular surgical procedure specifically named.” Hopefully after reading today’s humor-filled deep dive article into exactly why most specialized fields heavily rely/revamp language lingo-nuances over time instead calling something simply ‘surgery’, now everyone who reads through here won’t easily flinch or err when sharing jokes about the ever-elusive “cataract surgery.”

Keep on eyein’!

[this should not be taken too seriously – my intention is only to add humor while explaining another layer of confusion as certain medical procedures get re-labeled or evolve over time based on various factors like technology advancements, new techniques developed by researchers lots more.]
