Can you get pregnant on the implant?

Do you ever wonder if your implant will be there for you when you need it the most? Does that tiny little rod, nestled in your arm like a sloth in a tree, really keep babies from happening? Well my friend, let’s dive into the world of implants and find out if they’re truly an impenetrable fortress or just another contraceptive con.

What is an Implant?

First things first, let’s start at the very beginning. An implant is a tiny plastic rod – about the size of matchstick- inserted under your skin. It releases progestin over time to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation so those pesky sperm can’t fertilize any eggs hanging around.

But wait! There’s more! The progestin also thickens cervical mucus making it harder for sperm to get through and thins out uterine lining which makes implantation near impossible (since mama needs some cushy walls for her baby). Double win!

How Effective Is It?

Alright, now that we’ve got down what an implant is made of, let’s talk numbers. According to our good friends at Planned Parenthood(who I trust with my very soul), less than one woman out of 100 becomes pregnant each year while using birth control correctly and consistently [1]. Yes,ONE WOMAN OUT OF ONE HUNDRED….Those are pretty solid odds my friends.

However(cue dramatic music)…with typical use (aka “Oops I forgot my pill this morning”) 9% (%Nine???)of women become pregnant within their first year([2]Oh no!). So make sure to dot those i’s and cross those t’s because even Ms.Perfect-Pill-Pack-Remembers sometimes forgets(I speak from experience)!

So That Brings Us To Our Big Question…

Can you still get pregnant on the implant??? Now, let me preface this by saying that there are no guarantees in life (except for death and taxes). However, it’s statistically unlikely to have a bun roasting in your oven with an implant.

But hold up…I’m sure you’ve read horror stories of women becoming miraculously impregnated while sporting their little matchstick rod. How the heck does that happen?! Allow me to explain.

What Causes Pregnancy on Implants?

As we mentioned before, the implant releases progestin over time which is awesome when it comes to baby prevention BUT can cause funky things with our menstrual cycle. Some women may experience irregular periods(at least not every month like grandma says-or is that just mine?) or even totally stop having them(woohoo no cramps!). HOWEVERORperhaps as hidden danger lurks…there’s a chance ovulation can STILL occur(chalk one up for Mother Nature). This could lead to sneaky sperm making their way through the thick cervical mucus(city traffic has nothing on these guys).

Also keep in mind – if you got your {implant placed immediately after} giving birth (mama bear was tired of playing around), then there’s a chance pregnancy could happen because it takes about seven days for the implant to start working at full capacity [3] (Babies do be speedy sometimes folks).

So What Do You Do If You Think It Failed?

If you’re experiencing worrying symptoms- missed period, nausea – don’t panic just yet! There are plenty of reasons why those symptoms might crop up aside from im-preg-nan-cy(Wait don’t spell out S-O-B-E-R-L-Y….) . But just~to rule out any potential surprises, take advantage of our friendly neighbors at Planned Parenthood and schedule an appointment since they can tell within minutes!(Who doesn’t love instant gratification?)

If you happen to be that one unlucky lass (oopsie doopsie), then it’s time for Plan B (Spicy!). Emergency contraception can still work on those pesky sperm so don’t hesitate- PLANT THAT CONFIDENCE!( like a flower bed)

Can The Implant Cause Damage To Fetus If pregnant?

But what if fate was conspiring against us and the baby is already cooking (No#…Chocolate cake good, baby not acceptable)? Are there any risks from having an implant in while preggers? Welllllll….It turns out that removing the implant during a pregnancy isn’t a lethal decision according to Planned Parenthood. There are rare cases of complications related to removal but they aren’t life-threatening [4]. However, since progestin used in im-preg-nan-cy prevention might cause harmful effects on your lil’ growing peanut(it could hinder growth+wreak havoc with their organs among other things)(horrible!!!> <), preggies who already have hormones play after the initial 7-day waiting period should keep chuggin away! Baby will start clean right after Mama weans off it.

Conclusion

In conclusion(Do speak formally when required), the chances of becoming pregnant with ~a little matchstick rod~ implanted under your arm are slim BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE!! Keep tabs on when you’re getting down and dirty(finger guns), hit up PP(preferably metaphorically), and know all about emergency contraceptives. Now go live freely(With precautions) my friends!
