Can bacterial diseases be cured?
If there’s one thing bacteria love, it’s a good host. Unfortunately, that host is often us. Bacterial diseases have been plaguing human beings since the dawn of time (or at least since the invention of microscopes). But the big question on everyone’s mind is: can bacterial diseases be cured? Well, hold onto your hats because we’re about to find out!
The Science Behind Bacteria
Before we dive into whether or not bacterial diseases can be cured, let’s take a look at what exactly bacteria are and how they work.
What Are Bacteria?
Bacteria are unicellular organisms that come in all shapes and sizes. They can live just about anywhere – from the Arctic to boiling hot springs – and some even reside inside our own bodies! That microscopic guy really gets around.
How Do They Work?
Like us humans, bacteria need food to survive. And just like us when we scarf down some gourmet grub (or fast food), bacteria start reproducing like crazy. It doesn’t take long before you’ve got yourself an army of tiny terrors growing exponentially.
But here’s the kicker: not all bacteria are bad! In fact, many types actually help keep us healthy by living symbiotically with our bodies. However, you don’t want to mess with those rogue ‘one cell wonders’ cause they’ll wreak havoc in no time flat!
Types of Bacterial Diseases
There are tons of different bacterial diseases out there ranging from mild annoyances to life-threatening viruses (which is decidedly less than lol-worthy).
Tuberculosis
TB is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis which primarily attacks lungs but can attack any organ including spine or brain causing headaches weakness etc.The disease spreads via small droplets released during coughing/sneezing/speaking etc. There’s usually no fever if TB only affects lungs.
Strep Throat
A sore throat caused by Streptococcus bacteria is a real pain in the neck. Pun absolutely intended. Symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, and difficulty swallowing.
E.Coli Infection
E.coli is commonly found in fecal matter of human beings or animals and sometimes cause severe gastro-intestinal problems that leads to bloody diarrhea and stomach cramps
How Are Bacterial Diseases Cured?
So we know there are a ton of different types of bacterial diseases out there – but can they all be cured? Well it depends on how bad the disease is and what type of bacteria you’re dealing with (makes sense right?)
Antibiotics
Antibiotics are the most common treatment for bacterial infections. They work by killing or inhibiting the growth of bacteria so that our body’s natural immune system can fight off any remaining invaders like chicken fighting over scraps. Antibiotics might also be prescribed to prevent stemming from real possibility (like after surgery).
However, antibiotics do not affect viruses such as colds/flus etc(as why this article isn’t called ‘can ALL kinds illnesses be cured’)
Vaccines
Vaccines contain dead/benign microorganisms which trigger our immune systems into action giving us immunity. It helps develop relevant antibodies against a pathogen. If we end up encountering an actual live version, the antibodies recognize them before they cause harm.
For example: Children vaccinated against measles produce specific anti-measles antibody. You might still catch something serious like tetanus leading to permanent paralysis especially if unvaccinated. Therefore always check with your doctor!
## The Risks Of Not Treating A Bacterial Infection
Ignoring symptoms because everyone hates visiting doctors,is exceptionally risky.Let’s look at some reasons below:
### Long-term Damage
Certain untreated infections may result in prolonged medical issues such as chronic pains/joint pains/liver damage.
Spread of Infection
Not only are you risking your own health by ignoring a potential bacterial infection, but you’re also putting those around you in danger as well. Bacterial infections can spread easily through things like coughs/sneezes etc and lead to epidemics if unchecked.
Increased Risk Of Viral Co-infections
Many people with bacterial infections can end up contracting viral illnesses as well. This puts an additional burden on the immune system making it harder for one’s body to fight off even common viruses.
How To Prevent Bacterial Diseases
So we’ve covered how bacterial diseases happen and how they’re treated – but what about prevention? Here are some tips to keep bacteria at bay:
1) Wash Your Hands Regularly: One of the easiest ways to prevent the spread of bacteria is by washing your hands. Have colored soaps maybe that makes it fun?
2) Get Vaccinated : Like mentioned before, vaccines build immunity against specific pathogens.Application may vary( needs booster shots/outside prescription).
3) Sanitize Common Touch Surfaces : Things like doorknobs, table-tops etc. should be sanitized regularly.Effectively getting rid of all kinds germs right then and there!
4) Reduce contact Rates :Avoid close contact such as shaking hands/hugs/kissing or cover mouth & nose when sneezing/coughing especially in public places esp during pandemics/Social distancing QUACK!QUACK!
Conclusion
Although many types of bacterial diseases are curable,it’s important not forget how dangerous certain illnesses can be.So stay proactive.Take care this flu season folks, and most importantly wash your hands!”Quack!!
