Can amantadine cause weight gain?

If you’re looking to lose some pounds, and your doctor has prescribed amantadine for any reason whatsoever, take a seat back and read this. There’s no hiding the fact that amantadine can in some cases cause weight gain. But don’t worry; there are solutions!

What is Amantadine?

Amantadine is one of those drugs that have been around forever. Developed as an antiviral medication to help with flu pandemics, researchers shortly afterward discovered its effectiveness in treating Parkinson’s disease.

Over time, we’ve come up with even more reasons to use it: restless leg syndrome (RLS), fibromyalgia fatigue, dystonia (uncontrolled muscle contractions), Lyme disease treatment, brain injury recovery – just name it! Essentially amantadine works by increasing dopamine release from nerve cells in the brain.

Why does Amantadine Cause Weight Gain?

While the exact science behind why amanta-whatever causes weight gain has yet not yet come out as a family-friendly bedtime talebook; what happens beneath,

According to scientific reports, rat models did consume more food when given amantidine than before they consumed it.

Here comes my own hypothesis: dopamine enhances our perception of pleasure after eating. So while taking AmantaDOPAMINE will be enhanced which leads us(mere humans)to eat larger servings without realizing how much we’ve eaten because everything tastes so good!!and Ha!!hence begins(or continues)our battle against obesity

So short summary – Dopamine enhances cravings ==> We Eat More ==> Fat accumulation ensues

Who Would Be More Susceptible To This Effect Of The Drug?

It’s hard logic above all else here but people who were already predisposed or vulnerable to gaining weight could find themselves packing on some extra pounds if they start taking amantadine.

For instance, people with Parkinson’s disease are already struggling with weight loss due to muscle rigidity and other related issues. Dealing with the additional effect of amantadine only adds up to their overall problems.
And those dealing with chronic fatigue syndrome have a higher possibility/reason to show increased weight gain when put on the medication.

This was all sounding like bad news- so lets look at how we can mitigate/prevent/delay any possible weigh gain ,that is inevitable or not

Remember there’s always something that could be done about it

Steps You Can Take To Prevent Amantadine-caused Weight Gain

Some ideas for you(sorta)Nyour Physician could help better here but these have helped others before(With Extra Doses Of Caution:)

Eat healthily:

A good diet cannot be overemphasized as its impact on our physical wellness goes beyond just “keeping” us healthy. Beyond substituting junk food for fresh fruits and veggies(Rolls DO NOT!!count as veggies) – We could also try incorporating nutrient-packed foods rather than empty calorie ones(this needs a re-read).rather
We may also consider reducing meal size/load but increasing frequency/

Keep track of your caloric intake:

It’d be best if you recorded what you eat daily in order to get an idea of how many calories (energy!) you’re consuming each day compared against what the ideal amount would need/want.
When tallying up calories, ensure that snacks plus condiments work In tandem where necessary

1.Try having lean protein set aside from unhealthy fats
2.Watch portions(super important)
3.Load yourself(Haaa! Not too much tho😄) some complex carbs{In your serving,you might want give space eg Salad=(Spinach + Tomatoes +Lean Fat Less Chicken+ Feta cheese)}
4.Drink lots of water!!!

Exercise:

Adding some exercise to your daily routine is important as it elevates the metabolism rate of our body which helps us burn excess calories within our body(kinda awesomesauce right?).(Yam- Increase!= Amanta+WeightGain).

Simple weight-bearing strength exercises such as resistance bands, push-ups and dumbbell weights go a long way for stimulating muscle growth. This in turn speeds up burning of calories even when not exercising.
