Can alcohol cause nose bleeds?

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been in a loud bar with raging music and the smell of alcohol hanging like a thick fog. Alright, now put them down before everyone thinks you’re raising hands for no real reason. You know what I’m talking about, don’t lie to yourself – we’ve all had our fair share of drunken escapades that have resulted in some interesting stories from the night before.

However, have you ever had a drink or two (or ten) and then started experiencing random nosebleeds while still at the bar? No? Just me? Well, I’m here to address this issue once and for all.

Can alcohol actually cause nose bleeds, or am I just too clumsy that even my blood vessels are shaking their heads in shame? Let’s dive deeper into this topic and see if we can get some answers.

What causes nosebleeds?

To understand whether alcohol can cause nosebleeds or not, it’s important to first understand what actually causes these pesky red rivulets streaming from our nostrils.

When the tiny blood vessels inside your nostrils become irritated or injured – say by inserting fingers in there far more than necessary (wink wink) – they may rupture and bleed out. Other common reasons include colds/allergies that dry out nasal tissues, high altitude travel without equalizing pressure changes properly which dries out membranes around your face holes (like Vistara airlines #justsaying), picking one’s nose frequently (DON’T PRETEND IT’S NOT YOU)… The list goes on but you get my point.

In other words – anything that makes those squishy parts inside our noses go ouchie could lead to bleeding through them if luck isn’t on your side.

Now where does booze come into play?

Alcohol: A culprit for Nose Bleeds

Believe it or not, alcohol consumption can in fact trigger nosebleeds in a few different ways. But of course, since we are no science geeks that you might have happily ignored during high school – I’ll keep this part as simple as my brain cells permit.

Dries out nasal membranes

One way alcohol and nose bleeds go hand-in-hand is due to its dehydrating effect on the body. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, when you drink alcohol (especially hard liquor), it sucks moisture from practically everywhere; cells at the back of your throat lining , kidneys, skin… and unfortunately seeping up all your precious snot production abilities no matter how much fuel those bad boys need (poor things…)

This causes dehydration and dries out nasal passages inside which increases probability for these passages getting inflamed or even tear at contact; a very wincing thought.

Increases blood pressure

Another fun way alcohol leads us to bleed away our dignity is by elevating our blood pressure temporarily. When combined with dehydration already mentioned above- one can easily conclude that strained vessels could turn into leaks right now or just wait for later – but there’s surely going to be some red flag sooner than last call.

What kind of booze triggers nosebleeds?

There’s no specific type (what?..its like with people really); both beer bongs and vodka shots alike contain ethanol which has similar dehydrating effects across the board! However, beverages made through fermentation process (ahem craft beers) contain histamine content which triggers allergies symptoms more often 【citation needed】(no citations lol)

In any case overdoing/overindulging on ethanol-infused liquids puts one up higher chances for mouth slurring before another new adjective regarding body hemorrhage pops up!

Other factors

Of course‚ other reasons outside raunchy party nights are not fully eliminated yet.

Anemia, allergies such as hay fever – and medicines like aspirin/ anti-inflammatories decreasing blood clot formation can also be responsible for nosebleeds if someone has any underlying problem. Even lack of Vitamin K which does not allow proper blood compiling (Foods high in vitamin K includes variety (spinach, kale or broccoli – still counts even when fried) not kebab with extra mayo-Sauces).

All I’m saying is that alcohol shouldn’t automatically become the scapegoat here… It’s pretty damn good at ruining our lives all by itself without adding the blame bucks on it haphazardly!

Conclusion

So now we know… Can Alcohol cause Nose bleeds? As much as we would love to have one definitive answer – The evidence says: maybe.

While there are clearly other factors at play; drinking an excessive amount of alcohol could make us more prone to experiencing some bleeding inside those nostrils. While sipping slowly may spare your vascular system from unnecessary stress apart from making you more “chatty” among your group- a win-win situation!

As with everything else on this planet – moderation can be key…but who wants just one tiny lick of whipped cream after taco bell’s XXL platter anyways?

As far as solutions go(Nah…I won’t mention reducing intake)#Like Just Saying nothing substitutes adequate hydration so keep guzzling water bottles alongside party drinks(P.S hangover prevention too!) If thirsty taste buds pester around in between ask tender bartender to add dash soda more ice to cocktails for better results.

After all booze related conversations always get wittier with gin-filled grapefruit juice than a plain OJ carton…

Plus most importantly don’t let worry about these red streaks ruin a potentially dance-move-filled-night (wink wink again)

Stay awesome , bon appétit & cheers
