Atherosclerosis is a condition where your arteries become clogged with all sorts of yucky stuff, such as cholesterol and other fatty substances. This can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and other unpleasant conditions that nobody wants to experience (but we’ll talk about those later).
So why are we talking about it? Because apparently some people who don’t like ice cream or bacon are interested in getting an atherosclerosis CT scan. And if you’re one of those people, then buckle up because we’re going to take you on a wild ride through the world of medical imaging!
What is an Atherosclerosis CT Scan?
An atherosclerosis CT scan (also known as coronary calcium scoring) is a non-invasive imaging test that uses X-rays to visualize the calcified plaque buildup in your blood vessels (sounds fun right?). The test measures the amount of calcium present in the walls of your arteries; this can indicate how much plaque has built up over time.
The results from this exam are given in what’s called an Agatston score. Basically, the more calcified plaque that’s present in your arteries, the higher your score will be (kinda like golf but not really).
So Why Would Someone Get One Of These Scans Anyway?
There are several reasons why someone might want an atherosclerosis CT scan:
- They have risk factors for heart disease
- They’ve experienced chest pain or other symptoms that could be related to heart problems
- They want peace-of-mind
One thing to keep in mind: while this test can give doctors important information about plaque buildup and potential future health risks…it doesn’t necessarily mean anything definite will happen down the line (woohoo!)
But enough serious talk for now…
How Do I Prepare For Atherosclerosis CT Scan?
If you’re planning on getting this test, your doctor will give you specific instructions but here are some general things to keep in mind:
- You may be asked not to consume caffeine for several hours before the exam
- Certain medications might need to be stopped temporarily
- It’s important that you don’t eat or drink anything before the scan
And now for a little fun fact about atherosclerosis CT scans: they can also detect “incidentalomas”. These are abnormal growths or masses that show up during imaging tests, although they aren’t necessarily related. Sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie (or an episode of House M.D.)!
What Happens During An Atherosclerosis CT Scan?
The procedure itself is pretty simple and straightforward:
- You’ll lie down on an exam table
- Electrodes will be attached to your chest so that your heart rate can be monitored during the scan.
- The machine will begin moving around you, taking pictures with X-rays as it goes.
To help keep you from wriggling too much while lying still (easier said than done) there might even Ben music playing to calm those nerves (no Wham! music though…)
Overall it should only take about 20 minutes tops and then boom—you’re all set! Results typically come back within a few days time.
Are There Any Risks To Atherosclerosis CT Scans?
As with any medical procedure involving radiation exposure (even if minimal) there is always some level of concern when thinking long term effects like cancer risk and whatnot (cue anxiety attack) However, most medical professionals agree that risks posed by such minor levels ou-trump (ha-betcha haven’t heard that one before) potential benefits of identifying early stage heart implications.
In short: sometimes we just have to trust science and modern medicine, folks.
Can’t I Just Get An Ultrasound Instead?
Sorry to burst your bubble, but no. Ultrasounds won’t be able to detect calcified plaque in the same way that a CT scan can so we’re out of luck on this one.
But chin up: at least you still have the luxury of being able to indulge in some ice cream as an outstanding consolation prize (it’s all about silver linings right?).
What Do The Results Mean (if any)?
Let’s break down what Agatston scores mean:
0–10: Low risk
11–100: Intermediate risk
101 or higher: High risk
It might be possible for individuals with high RS- would it may not affect their lifestyle just yet however other cases where indicated by age group require immediate attention such as tight monitoring over blood pressure and slashing salt intake from ones regular diet among others. But it is best not worry yourself too much until discussing with healthcare experts incase there are more viable paths before delving into medication treatments.
Here Comes Another Fun Fact – According to Harvard Health Publishing “Agatston’s score isn’t perfect because atherosclerosis doesn’t necessarily lead calcium deposits”. Basically…there are plenty of unknowns when it comes down determining heart health status using these imaging tests.
Long story short – Live Long Not Counting Scores! Maybe focus on making sure stress stays low yesterday insert winking emoji here!
In conclusion, while getting an atherosclerosis CT scan has its purposes don’t forget theres also things talk may take you a little farther within maintaining good cardiovascular health outside ‘technical’ concern situations (such improving eating habits whether cutting back meat frequency or boosting vegetable portions) anyways life tendt feel infinitely better while embracing fun hobbies like kayaking which happen work towards becoming just generally happier & reducing overall body burnout levels including inflammation threats for instance after external physical activity.
