Are utis curable?

It’s the burning question that no one wants to ask: are UTIs curable? The short answer is yes, but before we get into the details, let’s first discuss what exactly a UTI is.

What is a UTI?

A Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of your urinary system; bladder, kidneys, ureters, or urethra. Women are more susceptible to getting them than men due to their shorter urethras (yes guys, we have it easier), but they can happen to anyone at any age.

Symptoms of a UTI

If you’ve ever had a UTI before (and if you haven’t then I’m jealous), then you know how painful and uncomfortable it can be. Here are some common symptoms:

  • A strong urge to pee
  • A burning feeling when peeing
  • Passing frequent small amounts of urine
  • Cloudy or bad smelling urine
  • Pain in your lower abdomen or back

Causes of a UTI

The most common cause of a UTIs is bacteria entering through the urethra and infecting the bladder. This can happen during sex (sorry not sorry) due to close proximity between genitals and anus – allowing bacteria which normally resides in the colon aka “poop loop”, can easily find its way into our “pink tunnel”. Other causes include holding your pee too long (been there done that) , wiping from back-to-front after using bathroom (dirty birds!), stds such as HIV..wow this list could go on 😐

Now let’s talk about treatment options for those who have contracted an evil bacterial invasion:

Antibiotics

Antibiotics clear up infections by killing harmful growing microorganism baddies. Usually prescribed for 3 days (#blessed🙌) but if they gotcha really bad, the doc could have you taking medication for up to 2 weeks.

Home Remedies

In addition to antibiotics, some people rely on natural remedies such as drinking cranberry juice (no not the sugary crap), taking probiotics which helps maintain a healthy bacterial balance in the gut and last but definitely not least: drinking lots of water💦 – this will help flush out toxins and ensure that your body is well hydrated.

Prevention

As much as we love urinary infections #%&, it’s better just to steer clear altogether by doing things such

  • Pee immediately after sex
  • Always stay hydrated
  • Practicing good hygiene
  • Wiping front-to-back (to my point earlier)
  • Calcium phosphate supplements (👀interesting)

UTIs are usually simple/ straight-forward affairs – antibiotics should do the trick. But what happens when antibiotics don’t work? This can occur due either antibiotic resistance or involvement of other medical problems: CKD(chronic kidney disease), Neurogenic bladder(funky nerve issues affecting bladder function)or stones/tumors within the urinary tract. In these situations more advanced testing may be necessary 😕

Hopefully by now I’ve answered your question on whether a UTI is curable – YES! It’s always recommended that treatment be started promptly so that any potential complications do not develop.

So go forth dear friends with newfound knowledge, take preventative measures where possible (no sitting around in wet bathing suits ladies!) and let’s hope we never get infected again!
