Are skin tags normal?

Oh, skin tags – those little bumps that can make you wonder if it’s time to call in a mole crew to tackle the issue. But are they normal or something to worry about?

Let’s take a closer look and answer this question once and for all\.

What Are Skin Tags Anyway?

Think of skin tags as mini balloons made of soft tissue. They typically develop where there is friction, such as your neck or underarms.

Ahh, so that explains why mine tend to pop up like uninvited guests at a party. Goodbye perfect Instagram pictures!

Skin tags range in size from tiny pinpricks to larger than life thumb-sized monsters. The good news is they’re benign (non-cancerous) and don’t need treatment unless they cause irritation or bother you aesthetically.

Why Do We Get Them?

While no one knows for sure what causes them, some researchers think it might have something to do with the growth hormone insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1).

Who knew?! Our levels of IGF-1 increase during puberty, pregnancy and times when we gain weight, which makes sense because these periods are also prime time for skin tag development. Makes me wish I had jumped on the broccoli bandwagon years ago!
