Are birth control pills 100 effective?

Just because birth control pills are commonly used by women in all parts of the world doesn’t mean you must blindly believe that they’re one hundred percent effective. As much as we’d love to depend on these magic pills, let’s examine if our trust is well-founded.

Short history of birth control pills

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s take a quick trip back in time and see where it all started. We owe thanks to Margaret Sanger, who fought for women’s rights and family planning services since 1914. She is credited with pioneering access to contraceptive education across America through her activism and legal battles.

Then came Gregory Pincus, an American biologist and researcher who teamed up with John Rock, a gynecologist at Harvard Medical School ,to develop the first oral contraceptive pill called Enovid-10 in May 1960( See what I did there? Not just throwing dates at ya).

How do birth control pills work?

Let’s start with some science behind contraceptives – Hormones!

Birth control pils are made from synthetic hormones namely estrogens or/and progestins which trick your body into believing its pregnant. In simple terms ‘if there’s no ovulation then there can be no pregnancy’. Birth Control medicine effectively suppresses menstural cycle associated hormone production( luteinizing hormone (LH) & follicle stimulating hormone(FSH)) thus stopping egg releasal during each mentrual cycle Yes! Trickery has been scientifically successful

Different types of contraceptive measures

If they’re not providing matchless prevention against unwanted pregnancy by cent-percent preventing fertilization every time we use them anyway, then why bother using them instead of going for other methods such as fertility tracking or condoms?

Well if you’ve been having too many drinks/ forgeting to stock up on condoms or hate long term solotions surgical ones ot patch, birth control pills might just be what you need.

1. Condoms

“wrap it before your tap it”. Though commonly used during sexual intercourse, they have disadvantages such as failed prevention due tearing ,unclubbing, impropery disposing and Ill fitting of latex ones when there are allergies

2. Fertility tracking

ever heard ‘you’re pregnant’ in a british accent? Maybe that’s cos British and Aussies use ovulation kits more than Americans. While having sex might sound fun way to track fertilization periods yet popular in many societies (🧐), it assumes all women’s menstrual cycles will be predictable making it prone unskilled error, besides the kit can only predict expected fertility period usually through temperature variations .

Birth Control Pills: What about Failure Rates?

Now coming back to our main topic – Are Birth Control Pills 100% Effective?

To put this into perspective,Nothing is ever one hundred percent perfect, not even Intentional emojis 🤦‍♀️

The failure rate for oral contraceptives is dependent upon their usage; Age also counts with higher probability for younger ages (those under age <20). Remember how stern granny was when she’d say ” Be careful Honey!’“

According to the CDC National Survey of Family Growth, effective use of combination pills had a failure rate of only O.3% if used correctly at every sexual encounter(woah!), However let downs happen much often via missing scheduled dosages sometimes caused by water retention from premenstrual syndrome pill food interaction etc.Thats where implantaion comes into play giving almost same efficacy without needing daily dosage compliance since its implanted inside skin offering protection over years depending on type installed but hey we’re out here talking pills so act accordingly

Takeaway

At the end of the day whether to depend on oral contraceptives or not is up to you.

Weighing their reliability given varied individual factors including age, used mechanism and medication compliance against other contraceptive choices available would be a wise decision.

But hey ‘Aunt Flow’ jokes familliar with birth control pills? Not always!
