American made antibiotics?

There has been a huge debate about the origin of antibiotics and where they are made. Some people believe that all medicines and drugs should be made in America while others don’t really care as long as it works. The truth is, there aren’t many American-made antibiotics out there these days, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

The Origins Of Antibiotics

Antibiotics were first discovered by accident in 1928 when Alexander Fleming noticed that mold had contaminated one of his petri dishes. He observed that the bacteria near the mold had died while everything else was still thriving. It turns out this mold was penicillin and it became the very first antibiotic.

Since then, many other types of antibiotics have been discovered including tetracycline, erythromycin, cephalosporins, and more recently fluoroquinolones like Levofloxacin (Levaquin).

Where Are Antibiotics Manufactured?

Today most generic drugs are manufactured overseas especially in India as they offer lower labor costs than here in America which means cheaper drug prices for patients! In fact according to some studies up to 89% of all prescription medications consumed in America come from foreign countries- mostly India (24%) China(18%) or European countries such as Germany(13%).

The shortage of API producers for certain pharmaceutical ingredients led to Chinese companies capturing 80%-90% market share across several markets including Pen G procaine – an antibiotic used against streptococcus infections.

Recently with COVID-19 reemphasizing how dependent we currently are on foreign production we may start seeing a shift towards new facilities being built here at home.Concerns over national security related solely to our dependence on drugs produced abroad caused two bipartisan bills promoting U.S. medical manufacturing to be introduced in Congress.

The bipartisan Re-energizing Lethality by Modernizing Infrastructure and Enhancing Manufacturing (ReLIBERATE) Act of 2021 was recently proposed with the expectation of doubling down on American drug research, development, and manufacture if passed.

Why Is This Important?

The recent pandemic has highlighted just how important it is to have a reliable supply chain for both testing supplies and drugs in general . Although India remains a large supplier for these medicines due to lower production costs there remain ongoing concerns about quality control as evidenced by recalls issued over valsartan which suffered from poor-quality ingredients supplied from China & India.

Putting more emphasis on acquiring high-quality American-made antibiotics would eliminate many of the issues related solely with pharmaceuticals produced abroad – creating local jobs across multiple levels while decreasing foreign dependency.

With their being so little oversight around API online platforms such as Alibaba – offer potential customers access unlimited ‘wholesale’ ingredient prices making it easier than ever before for smaller scale operations to launch without full understanding or regulation .

While some companies do invest heavily into R&D like Pfizer others (especially startup players ) can struggle with ensuring purity meanwhile also adhering regulatory compliance requirements allowing them handle dangerous products safely.

Furthermore examining FDA data shows that cancer patients are increasingly at risk for contaminated generic injectable medications which highlights an immediate need not only improved surveillance but also increased pharmacovigilance measures later this year per new legislation signed off two experts working upon conflicts-of-interest based grounds authorized extension potential liability suits domestically created ingredients maintaining GMP standards indigenously manufactured right here stateside under proper QMS procedures including systematic traceability using secure blockchain technology starting earlier next month.

Patients shouldn’t expect all newly manufactured antibiotics to come out immediately after passing new regulations; It often takes a long time to create, test and approve these drugs. But once they are ready for the market you can expect them to be higher-quality with more strict regulation on things like purity leaching or foreign contamination.

Although we can’t foresee what will happen in 10 years, currently there is much excitement about increased production of pharmaceuticals here because it would help build up our own ability and independence from other countries which in uncertain times like these sometimes really matters.

Hopefully proponents of legislation such as The Re-energizing Lethality by Modernizing Infrastructure and Enhancing Manufacturing (ReLIBERATE) Act will have success changing current conditions paving way faster more secure supply chains while increasing both national security possibilities if passed.
