Notes on a Screen: Madison Area Television, Gaming, and Film News 2008 - Week 23

Arts | Film | Television | Gaming

chadvaderslicehandoff.jpgThe most important local screen news this week regards the future of WYOU. The community television station has a bleak future, Samara Kalk Derby reported on the situation for the Cap Times:

Quote:
Charter Communications is dropping its local cable franchise agreement with Madison in favor of a statewide franchise allowed under a recent change in state law regulating cable TV providers. All financing for public, educational and government channels, or PEG channels, is set to end by February 2011.

Where is season two of internet sensation Chad Vader? Blame Society continues to negotiate the future of the show, but in the meantime they've begun producing "employee training videos" for new hires at Empire Market. The first features Chad and answers the always important produce department customer service question: What to do if you think there is a spy from a competing store spying on the beets?

Sex in MadCity: An Ode to SATC, Madison Style

Adventure | Television

madcity.jpgTonight at 7 pm at the Majestic Theatre, Dane101, along with Up Spatique and Sundance608, is proud to present Sex in MadCity, complete with raffles and episodes of Sex and the City on the big screen. In honor of that event, our newest writer, the lovely Ashley, sounds off on what Sex and the City might be like if it were set in the Big Cheese instead of the Big Apple.

Let's face it—if you’re from the Midwest you probably can’t even pronounce Manolo Blahnik. And you certainly don’t own a pair of such high-fashion-high-heels.

But that’s not to say that you don’t know and love the girls who once pranced in those high heels down brightly lit New York City streets, on their way to order a $12 Cosmo and dish about their latest break ups with all different kinds of assholes—-rich ones, French ones, Big ones.

Notes On A Screen: Madison Area Film, TV, and Gaming News 2008: Week 20

Arts | Film | Television | Gaming

smallpublicenemies.jpgWe haven't produced a "Notes On A Screen" since the week of the Wisconsin Film Festival, apologies. We blame complete silver screen burnout. With all of the hoopla regarding Public Enemies being filmed around the Capitol earlier this week this seems like the best time to fire up the weekly round-up of TV, gaming, and film news coming out of the greater Madison metropolitan area.

Johnny Depp wasn't in town for this shoot of what has come to be known simply as P.E., but Christian Bale and Billy Crudup did strut up the steps of the Capitol building as Madison doubled for Hoover's fledgling FBI headquarters. Bale is playing Melvin Purvis, who was Dillinger's pursuer, while Crudup is portraying the young Hoover. The results are photos and coverage galore.

Chad Vader provides the voice of Darth Vader on tonight's "Deal or No Deal"

Arts | Television
dealornodealvader.jpgDamn it! I'm trying very hard not to geek out all over Dane101 right now.

Confession #1: Up until roughly 1999 I was a card carrying member of the Star Wars cult. I wasn't so bad that I would dress up as my favorite characters, but I did once go as far as driving eight hours out of my way just to see the Star Wars: The Magic of the Myth exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. and I did wait in line for at least four hours when they rereleased the films on the big screen (Note: I did not camp out). My love for that franchise has waned greatly over the past decade, but it still holds a special place in my heart, so when I saw that Madison's Matt Sloan, part of the Blame Society Productions team that brought the Internet the viral sensation Chad Vader, was going to be the voice of Darth Vader on Deal Or No Deal I thought it would be worth casually checking out. As you may or may not know, in Blame Society's parody Chad Vader is Darth Vader's younger brother who is day manager at Empire Market. Click here to read more.

Sex in Mad City: May 28 at the Majestic Theatre

Arts | Television

sand.jpgAre you a Charlotte or a Carrie? Who is your Big? Manolo Blahniks= alternate name for Seasonal Affect Disorder or shoes so coveted you’ll spend a month’s pay on one pair? If these questions make sense to you, you need to gussy up in your Manhattan best, grab a few gal pals and sashay down the red carpet into the Majestic Theatre on Wednesday, May 28th, at 7 pm. Just 48 little hours prior to the premiere of the Sex and the City movie, Dane101 along with Up Spatique and the fine folks at the Majestic are presenting Sex in MadCity, a gala soiree that’ll make you feel for one night like you’re partying in the Big Apple rather than the Big Cheese. There will be $3 Cosmopolitans and Appletinis, door prizes and giveaways from Up Spatique and the Majestic, and best of all, your favorite episodes from all 6 seasons of Sex and the City on the big screen! How will we know what your favorites are? Starting next week, Dane101 will be running a poll based on select episodes to choose which ones will emerge as the top 5. Reader favorites will run between the very first episode (remember when Carrie used to talk directly to the camera?) and the very last (remember when Carrie moved to Paris)! Sure it’s a Wednesday night, but we all need a refresher course before the movie comes out on Friday. Will it be worth it? As Mr. Big would say, “Absofuckinglutely.”

Notes On A Screen: Madison Area Film, TV, and Gaming News 2008: Week 11

Arts | Film | Television | WisFilmFest2008

wff2008031208.GIFWe have plenty of Madison area screen news to report this week including a Batman villain planning to visit our city hall, an underachieving Vader preparing to get a promotion, more than a dozen Wisconsin Film Fest movies selling out, and prep work continuing for the arrival of Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. All that and more in this week's Notes On A Screen...

Last week we reported that little has been heard from Darth Vader's younger brother, Chad Vader, in recent weeks. But no longer, we have learned that there is some big news about to break regarding the Madison-produced internet sensation. First, Blame Society will discontinue selling Chad Vader Season One DVDs and T-Shirts on March 14. If you want to grab the potential collector's items before they are discontinued you can do so at the Blame Society website. Second, according to Blame Society's Aaron Yonda there is a very good reason for them to discontinue the DVDs, "We'll let you know the details as soon as we can. It has something to do with Chad possibly being made into a TV show. That's all I can say..."

America's Next Top Model: Waunakee Allison plays with Barbies, but does she get the boot? Cycle 10 Recap: Episode 3

Arts | Television

waunakeeallison030608.jpgBessie Cherry continues to track the progress of Waunakee's Allison on America's Next Top Model.

If you are super broken up about my missing the first one minute and forty seconds of America’s Next Top Model last night, you can blame either the anonymous driver of a white Izuzu with a Grateful Dead sticker that drove 14.5 MPH all the way down Willy Street, or the good folks at the Dane101 podcast for keeping me entertained just a smidgen too long. I choose the former. I don’t think I missed much more than excessive [insert synonym for squealing here].

When I tuned in, still fumbling with my laptop cord, the girls had been gifted with white quilted handbags that looked roughly the size of a La-Z-Boy recliner and just as comfy. The bags are stuffed with free goodies from rapper Nelly’s denim company Apple Bottoms. I will let a quote from the Apple Bottoms website describe the line’s magic: "The team of designers for Apple Bottoms seeks to highlight and accentuate the curves of a woman. Nelly is personally involved in the design process to make sure that the fashions deliver the magic to reveal the beauty of the woman who wears them." Marvita tells the confessional cam that she feels "hella juiced" because of free stuff. In fact, everyone seems hella juiced, except for our Waunakee Allison, who is sitting on the couch with her arms crossed wearing her best annoyed pout.
