When writing about the season opener for Mad Rollin Dolls a few months back, I mentioned this:
The Quad Squad isn't flashy, but they know how to set up blocks and how to read each other well, so what they lack in finesse, they make up with in pure strength and timing.
It was meant as a compliment (and not a backhanded one either), and in the back of my mind, I always kind of wished I would have written a bit differently as I didn't want the team to take it the wrong way. Luckily, when contacting Joan of Anarchy about this interview, she mentioned this to me:
I thought you might like to know that Quad Squad really enjoyed your description of our team in the Jan bout article. Thanks to you, we've gained a new slogan for season 4: "we may not be flashy, but we get the job done."
Awesome. I'm glad I could help.
What's your derby name and position?
Joan of Anarchy, blocker
What team are you captain for?
Quad Squad. (Best. Team. Ever.)
The Quad Squad is the top ranked team in the league, what's the secret to your success?
Quad Squad has innovative strategy and a fierce competitive streak, but our teamwork is by far our strongest asset. Quad Squad doesn't rely on a handful of rockstars to carry the rest of the team; we're a united force on the track. We play as a team, and we win as a team.
Who are some of the standout newcomers on your team?
We took on three rookies this year, and they are all outstanding. Lil' Miss Behavin' is a sensational jammer. Her instincts rival some of the league's 4th year veterans. Her talent was evident from day one -- and that was before she had even seen her first bout! Lil' Miss has got derby flowing in her veins. Kit Shickers hurt her knee in November, but her learning curve is so high that you'd never guess she took a three month break from scrimmaging. You'll see her setting up some great fences in this bout. Allie Gator has also come a long way. She's great at clearing clumps of opposing blockers, and she's had some spectacular jammer and blocker takedowns, too. Unfortunately, Allie's nursing a mild knee injury, but her smart strategy mind will be a great asset on the bench. And she'll definitely be back on skates for Finals.
I can't help but mention some of our outstanding veterans. Jenny Knoxville is a remarkable blocker, and she also holds the record for most career jammer points (604 pts). Quad Squad holds the top four slots for career blocker point differential (blocker whose team gained the most points over their opponents while skater was blocking) -- Lizzie Borden (120 pts), Bella Donna (86 pts), Predator (68 pts), and Juggernaut (67 pts).
Has "Snack" ever bitten you?
Just once. I billed him for the subsequent rounds of rabies shots.
What's the worst injury you've had playing roller derby?
Thanks to an awesome hit from a Reservoir Doll (Finals 2007), my jaw got knocked out of alignment. I battled through the rest of the jam, and when I got back to the bench, I banged my jaw back into place so I could keep on playin'.
What team do you play this Saturday?
The Unholy Rollers. They've grown a lot since we beat them in January, and I expect them to really bring it on Saturday. Both teams are hungry for the win. It's gonna be a grizzly match.
How exactly are you going to kick their ass on Saturday?
The same way we've kicked ass all season long -- strong packs, strong jammers, strong strategy, and a whole lotta heart.
Going into the semi-finals on April 12, the undefeated and top-ranked Quad Squad will battle the fourth-place Unholy Rollers, and the number-two Vaudeville Vixens will take on the third-place Reservoir Dolls. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 12. Action starts at 7:00 p.m. at Fast Forward Skate Center, 4649 Verona Rd, Madison.
