March Madness: Wisconsin learns the recipe for Badger Curry. Mmmmm...

Sports | Badgers

badgercurry032908.jpgBesides ending Wisconsin's run to the NCAA Tournament's Final Four, the second worst thing about the Badgers taking a dive to Davidson is that every blogger in the world used it as an opportunity to make puns on Davidson's Stephen Curry's name (including me). "Davidson serves up Curried Badger," "Badgers get served - with Curry," "Curried Badger on the Menu," "Badgers Have No Taste for Curry," and the worst, "Badgers Get Stuffed with Curry." While I couldn't find an actual recipe for Badger Curry, I did find a recipe for Badger Casserole. Besides the puns, what else are bloggers saying about the Badgers loss to the North Carolina team dubbed "Cinderella"? (hat tip to Dane101's Jason Dean for calling the Davidson victory.)

Senno On Sports says it best, Davidson is now America's team, "Those students, joined by LeBron James in the student section, received a treat watching Curry. No matter where tiny Davidson ends this year’s run - no 10 seed has advanced to the Final Four and only one other, Kent State in 2002, has reached the Elite Eight - Curry’s tournament run will go down in NCAA lore."

Hoops Marinara observed "as Bo waved his extended hand out over the court, the television audience got the message. Friday's meltdown was one of failed execution."

I caught the game at the Harmony Bar and the joint was packed until around the eight minute mark in the second half when it was becoming clear that the Badgers weren't going to pull it out. The crowd thinned, and one of the bartenders declared, "Well, Badgers are done," dramatic pause and then exclaimed, "time for Brewers Baseball!" My experience, the bar clearing out before the game was over, was mirrored all across Madison. Homer and the Transplants notes, "the Badgers didn’t stop fucking around. At times it felt like Davidson had snuck one of those training rims onto Wisconsin’s hoop. You know, the ones that make you shoot the ball on the perfect arc otherwise the ball bounces out? Well it wasn’t long until Davidson opened up a double digit lead, and the orders slowed down. It was going to be a busy night, but the worse the game got, the less business came in. Coincidence? You decide."

As for Mr. Curry, Blogcritics Magazine writes, "Stephen Curry dropped another 33 points and now has tallied 103 total in his three tournament games, good for the second best total in tournament history."

Stinger Nation takes a moment to reflect on the season, "For Bucky Badger, it was a surprisingly successful season. Losing Alando Tucker and Kammron Taylor did not make things look good going into the season. Frankly, I think Bo Ryan deserves any and all accolades for coaching this team to a 31-5 record. This is not to say there was no talent on the team, but he made more with less."

Sports and Stuff suggests that Coach Bo Ryan may not be ready for primetime, "Davidson did play some good defense, but I'm still not convinced that Ryan's swing offense is tournament worthy. Bo Ryan is an incredible coach, but he hasn't shown it in the tournament yet."

ts's March Madness Musings is trying to keep it all in perspective, "remember that few people picked UW to finish anywhere near the top in the Big Ten, yet the Badgers won the conference title and tournament. It's also good to keep in mind that until Bo Ryan arrived, just getting to the NCAA Tournament was considered to be a great achievement, and now the Badgers have completed back-to-back 30-win seasons."

And to circle back around to Davidson becoming America's team, it is worth reading Seriously Hope's entry capturing what it feels like to be part of a team that only your school believed in, but has gone on to prove the naysayers wrong. This is what victory feels like. I can't help but feel a little verklempt.

Any badger curry recipe would not be complete without mushrooms and snake.

I'm still happy with this year's UW hoops performance. After losing Tucker and Taylor we replaced their scoring with fantastic defense and great team play. I can't be too disappointed with their performance, especially after last year's vaunted squad couldn't get out of the first weekend. I look forward to next year with Bohannon and Hughes getting a year older and some of the last two years' recruits getting into the game. One concern - the Badgers under Bo Ryan have not won a NCAA tournament game against a team seeded higher than 9th...
