It's NCAA tournament time, and there are three things you can expect every year:
1.One team will get a bid they don't deserve based solely on past reputation (see Kentucky).
2.There will be upsets. Oh yes, there will.
3.Wisconsin fans will complain about their seeding.
I'm as big a Badger fan as anyone, but come on, this complaining is getting old. Yes the Badgers could have been a No. 2 seed and probably deserved to be. Yes, we all know how the Badgers "get screwed" every year by the committee. However, it could be worse. We could be Butler.
Butler finished the year 29-3, a better record then the Badgers. They beat Ohio State and Virgina Tech. They had a top 20 RPI, and finished the season ranked 12 in the AP poll. How did they fair in the seeding process? They are the No. 7 seed in the East; arguably the toughest of the four conferences.
The Badgers did not get screwed, they got lucky.
In the Midwest division, the Badgers stay close to home. Their first round games are in Omaha. If they win their first two, they play in Detroit. As a two seed, they likely would be playing in Phoenix or Houston should they reach the Sweet 16.
More important than location is division strength. The Badgers match up well again most of their opponents. Assuming they beat Cal St. Fullerton, the Badgers would meet the winner of the USC – Kansas State game. Both teams rely heavily on freshman scorers; O.J. Mayo for USC and Michael Beasley for Kansas State. Defensively, the Badgers can shut either team down.
If the Badgers make it through the first weekend of basketball, their likely opponent is Georgetown (although Davidson is my sleeper pick). Wisconsin and Georgetown's style are almost identical. Both teams slow the pace of the game. Both teams are very good defensively. Roy Hibbert is one of the best inside players in the country, but he is streaky. In a defensive battle, I give the edge to the Badgers.
Should the Badgers win the top half of the bracket, they will almost certainly face Kansas. While Kansas is the weakest No. 1 seed, they present match up problems for Wisconsin. Kansas is quick and can score at will. If both teams make it to this point, it would be a fun game to watch.
The tournament has proved disappointing for UW faithful the last two years. In 2006, Wisconsin lost to Arizona in the first round. Fans were upset last year when the team was a No. 2-seed, complaining that UW should be a No. 1. The team validated the selection committee by losing to UNLV in the second round.
Wisconsin's success this season is a result of stifling defense. However, their offense is streaky and occasionally non-existent. When the brackets were released, I realized that the Badgers could again lose in the second round. Then again, in the Midwest, they could easily be a Final Four team. Only time will tell.
Let the madness begin.
