Mayor to issue Proclamation to Mad Rollin Dolls
It all started on February 21. Having covered a great deal of the roller derby and many of their outside events, it dawned on Dane101 that many in Madison may not know what a great asset to the city the Dolls are beyond entertainment. So, we wondered, what would be a good way to share what an asset they are with Madisonians who may not see the Dolls as anything more than hurt in a skirt? Of course, a mayoral proclamation (we figured asking for a stadium might be pushing it)! Mayor Dave issued one for Bat Boy, so why not the Dolls? After attempting to write an impassioned plea, we were pleased as punch when the Mayor's office wrote back "this would be a fine idea." We passed the ball to Derby organizers and Olivia Neutron Bomb who worked with the Mayor over the past six months to smooth out a proclamation. The result will be heard Friday at the Duck Pond.
Be sure to pick up your tickets for the Mallards game when not only will the Mayor present the proclamtion, but our Dolls will take on the Minnesota Roller Girls (appropriately the Dolls will be decked out in their Dairyland pinstripes). See our plea to the Mayor below:
Dear Mayor Dave Cieslewicz-
Today I write to you as both a Madisonian and a Roller Derby fan. I'm sure you are aware of the flat-track battles that happen once a month at Fast Forward Roller Rink off of Verona Road. By night, the ladies that make up the Mad Rollin Dolls may appear to be nothing more than black and blue ruffians in short skirts looking for a scrap and in need of anger management. However, by day they are teachers, scientists, business owners and more. A cross section of the best of Madison.
In addition to consistently selling out the 800 capacity Fast Forward, the Mad Rollin Dolls have proven time and again that they have a sense of civic responsibility. They have donated money to the Red Cross, Gilda's Club, Domestic Abuse Intervention Services and the League of Women Voters. They have donated items to Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin, Dane County Humane Society and the Ridgewood Apartment Fire Victims. They have volunteered time to help out the Salvation Army, Art Fair on the Square, the MAMAs and Prevent Child Abuse America.
This is only a handful of ways the Mad Rollin Dolls have contributed to Madison. This is in addition to creating yet another way Madison is unique.
This weekend the travel team for the Mad Rollin Dolls, the Dairyland Dolls, will be competing at the Dust Devil in Tuscon, Arizona. They will be representing Madison against 20 sister leagues from cities across America. Win or lose, wouldn't it be great if they came home to a proclamation from the Mayor?
I hope you will consider honoring these women who have given so much to the city through blood, sweat and tears. Literally.

Thank you for your time.
