dane101's Madison Gig Guide: July 24 an 25

Tonight the Majestic is forgoing music in favor of movies as they bring The Goonies and The Sandlot to the vintage theater. Chunk and friends are up first at 8 p.m. followed by Hercules and friends at 10 p.m. There will be free Rocky Road Ice Cream provided by The Chocolate Shoppe.

The big event this weekend is Orton Park Festival which runs today until Sunday and includes amazing music including Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, The Pines, Pieta Brown and many more. Full schedule is here. There will also be people dancing in the trees like you're in a magic elven forest.

The Memorial Union Terrace is hosting a Funk Fest this weekend. Friday sees Tweed Funk with The Mustache. On Saturday you can catch Mama Digdown's Brass Band who are currently in the studio laying tracks for a new album due out by the end of the year. You'll likely get a preview of some of those tracks at the show. They'll be joined by Afro Zep. Both nights the music starts at 9:30 p.m.

Tonight the Dragonfly Lounge is hosting Chicago blues trio The Mutts along with Many Places and Ferdinand the Bull starting at 9:30 p.m. Dragonfly Lounge is roughly two blocks away from Full of Bull, so if you wanted to have a theme night you could eat bull while watching Ferdinand the Bull.

The German Art Students will be bringing their brand of pop punk to the High Noon Saloon for an early show this evening at 5:30 p.m. Enjoy two for one tap beer as they share the stage with Oedipus Tex. Stick around until 10 p.m. for a night of tribute bands including Misfits tribute All Murder and Willie Nelson tribute Nellie Wilson, they perform his songs backward (not really).

On Saturday at the High Noon you can "Rock for a Good Cause" starting at 9 p.m. The show is intended to be a benefit for Heather Knox and includes Pistol Club and Mahogany Hog. Donations will go to the Carbone Cancer Center in Heather's name.

You can't spell "fun" without three of the letters in Frequency, but you don't even need to know how to spell when you're at a show featuring Optometri, Superstar Fantastico, and Beefus. Those three bands will be on the stage tonight starting at 10 p.m. On Saturday, hold onto your socks as The Paver, El Valiente, and United Sons of Toil show you the true meaning of "musicianship." They also play at 10 p.m.

The Knuckle Down Saloon also has a big night of music on Saturday starting at 7 p.m. You can catch seven bands: Candy Machine Guns, Cleobury, Shy Recluse, Climbing the Aggrocrag, Fault Line Empires, Under Waves, and Amberson Hall.

Assuming Mickey's is still standing after last night's rowdy Screamin' Cyn Cyn and the Pons reunion show the venue will be rocking once again on Saturday as Sons of Atom and Beefus shake the foundation starting at 10 p.m.

Redamte Coffee House is one of State Street's best places to catch an all ages show. Starting at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow you can catch The Todays, Alma, and Ida Jo.
