Touring in support of their most recent release Music for Men, Gossip may have lost their 'The' but not their ability to rile up a crowd as they came through Madison a few weeks ago.
Produced by über-producer Rick Rubin, Gossip played to a packed Majestic Theater. Singer Beth Ditto opened Gossip's set by apologizing for her hoarse voice, saying she had a "great" time on Friday in Chicago. With Hannah Blilie providing highly danceable syncopated drum beats, Brace Paine laying down roaring guitar riffs and Ditto still reaching for the rafters with her soulful voice, the crowd at The Majestic didn't let Ditto's apparent tour related illness stop them from having a "great" time.
Opener MEN brought their activism on the road, combining infectious dance music with crowd pleasing political messages. At one point MEN was joined on stage by helpers who held up a large sign that simply read "Silence=Death."

I was very upset I missed their show due to unforseen events. Events that were much less interesting than the show. One can only pray that they return. Or try internet-stalking them until they agree to come back.

I happen to see The Gossip play at the Annex in 2006 and thought that it was one of the best shows I've seen, especially since I didn't know much about the Gossip before seeing them. Shortly after seeing them, I noticed that they blew up in popularity in the UK and soon were performing at huge venues across Europe. So when I saw that they were going to play in Madison, I was happy that they didn't become big enough to pass us by for one of the bigger cities.
Sadly, I was really disappointed in this show. Beth Ditto's voice is what all of us had come to the show to sing. I would have understand if she was getting extremely sick and that is why she was losing her voice. But as Dave mentioned, her main reason for losing her voice was her partying in Chicago the night before. It is very irresponsible for a singer to knowingly do activities that would damage their voice while they are on tour. Die Hard fans were enjoying themselves, this is true. But they also sang most of her songs since at some point in every song, she couldn't sing anymore. It felt like I was at a Gossip Karaoke night. Many people paid $20 to hear and see the Gossip. It's sad and a huge disappointment that only half of that happened.
