Notes On A Scene: Madison Area Music News 2008 -Week 29

drownoutthedaylights.jpgThe updates from the music scene have been sparse as we float through the summer music doldrums.

Saturday is a big night for Crustacean Records as the Madison-based record label unleashes the new DVD Drown Out the Daylights. The film will be screened at the Majestic Theater starting at 8 p.m. followed by performances by Mad Trucker Gone Mad (10 PM), The Skintones (11 PM), The Gusto (midnight) and Screamin' Cyn Cyn & The Pons (1 AM). This rockumentary takes a look behind the label and features interviews and performances by the label's artists.

Madison-raised, but Portland-based, Krist Krueger will be bringing Southerly back to Madison on September 9 for an intimate show at the Project Lodge.

Jentri Colello received a much deserved feature length article in this week's Isthmus

Flame Shark is on a hiatus of sorts, but Justin Jahnke reports on the bands blog that recording on a new album is set to happen soon.

Quote:
We've booked some time at a studio in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin for late July and August. We've got boatloads of new songs, but we're gonna focus on eight or nine for now. This will be the album I've been wanting to make my whole life. If there's anything I ever wanted to try I'm gonna try it on this one. Lots of percussion, lots of heavy organ a la Rusty LaRue, pedal steel a la Jory "Catfish" Simmons, lots of harmonies and backing vocals a la Goldenwings Meske, lots of piano, drums a la Alex Boyes and perhaps a few special guests, some fiddle a la Shauncey Ali. Once that's done, we're gonna start putting the live show to work. Whether that's in Chicago or Madison or where ever those horses over there will be working hard.

And that's all I've got for you this week!

Don't forget Bottomless Pit

Don't forget Bottomless Pit and the Kadane Brothers at High Noon tomorrow.

Big Big Furnace.

Whatever happened to Crustacean Records' very own Big Big Furnace? I loved those guys; I bust out 'Soundtrack to a Midwestern Winter' every December, and 'Losing You' was a stellar final effort.

A reunion show is necessary.
