Thursday, April 17th 9 pm. Man Man and Yeasayer at the High Noon. We don't need to say much about Man Man because the fine folks at True Endeavors inform us that the show is about to sell out, so likely you already know everything about them and you don't need tickets (just in case see video footage dane101 captured at the legendary Man Man/Girl Talk show at Club 770 in March of '07). But, in the chance that you haven't worked up the initiative to go out and purchase a ticket we have a pair. This also seems like a good time to note that True Endeavors has joined the Madison blogosphere. Welcome! Thursday April 17th 8:30pm. Appetite for Destruction and Brainerd at the Majestic Theater. Quick question; Who is less pompous than Axl Rose? Answer; Appetite for Destruction that’s who. I will admit to being a closet Guns n’ Roses fan, and Appetite for Destruction does a damned fine job as a tribute band. From the raspy yawp of Axl to the face shredding licks of Slash, Appetite will fill you. That was a little ambiguous wasn’t it? If tribute band’s aren’t your “thing” then be sure to show up early and catch opener Brainerd. Brainerd is a straight rock band who have been Madison mainstays for quite some time. I defy you go to their Myspace page and listen to “Underwater” from their 2005 release Animal Mother and not find something you enjoy. http://www.myspace.com/brainerd http://www.myspace.com/notquitegnr Friday April 18th 9:30 pm. The Gourds/The Patrick Sweaney Band. High Noon. 18+ I Rock Cleveland has this to say about the Gourds:
While their past albums are better known for their intellectual, snotty, reference-laden take on roots music, these Kaleidoscopic country-rockers have created a slower, more introspective batch of songs on their newest album, Noble Creatures. Don't worry, though: these songs are as relevant and irreverent as ever.
Saturday April 19th 8:00pm. Salsa Saturday featuring Madisalsa and DJ Papi Love at the Majestic Theater. I can’t dance, I’ll admit it. Sure occasionally I’ll do a naked dance that I’ll spare you the details of, but what I will say is that there are a lot of gyrations. Did I completely turn you off? Sorry. Let me make up for it with some muy caliente salsa music. I really don’t know what to say about Madisalsa except they make me want to try and dance, except in a socially acceptable way. I’m not really familiar with Salsa so I don’t have a real frame of reference for you. Was Tito Puente Salsa? He was on The Simpsons once; yeah that was a good episode. I’m not trying to demean the Salsa genre I’m just really unfamiliar with it, but I’m sure those of you who are already have your dancing shoes on. DJ Papi Love will be spinning for those who need an injection of latin heat. That was a little ambiguous wasn’t it. Enon, His & Her Vanities and Karmella's Game. Sunday, April 20 at the Annex. 7 p.m. Dane101, Just Sayin' Is All, and the Forward Collaborative are proud to present Enon, Karmella's Game, and His & Her Vanities at the Annex on 4/20. This will be one of the first shows for Madison's His & Hers in months and whoever had the idea to pair them with Enon is a genius! I'd try and describe Enon, but Daytrotter does it so much better, so we steal:
applying the glaze in thin layer after thin layer, soon enough turning the transparent film into a thick outer crust that makes everything you hope to look at appear cloudy and far off. You shiver and you’re elsewhere. There it stands lulling in short bursts and then penetrating into your deep depths, surging and filling every available inch of your ear with a drag racing blitz. The snow is falling when seconds earlier there was heat and beach. All the while, there’s a steady banging that shakes you from your grill to the tips of your hair and all the way to the soles of your shoes. The initial understanding of the Philadelphia group that’s completed and never complicated, just fulfilled, by Toko Yasuda and drummer Mike Schulz, is one of a speed that doubles on itself and stays there, jolting and ripping and then working, massaging the sour and sweet quadrants of the taste buds, efficiently coursing through all of the various turnstiles and frantic swoops. Cymbal crescendos and blackouts make for silver air, for a new sort of ozone that creates an implicit threat that someone’s behind you, staring with binoculars, recording all of your boring and incriminating deeds.
Sunday April 20th 8:00pm. Natty Nation, Nama Rumpa and DJ FRP at the Majestic Theater. I’ll be damned if the Majestic didn’t come through this week with three great shows. We close our their generosity with Reggae and what better day for Reggae than…Sunday…because Sundays are all about relaxing oh yeah and the show is on April 20th which apparently holds some value to a few of you. None of the listed bands above need any explanation, especially Natty Nation who have been jamming around Madison for as long as I can remember. The Dane101 Doppler Radar; Of course we Doppler you don’t. Anyway the weather report looks good for you to turn off that Scooby-Doo and the Harlem Globetrotters episode you have seen a thousand times before and head downtown for a bit of musical revelry |
