Here's a quick rundown of the guilty parties: Phat Phunktion Nine-piece funk band Phat Phunktion is a fixture on the Madison live music scene, and has recently been rejuvenated both by some new blood and keyboardist Tim Whalen's return from jazz studies in NYC. They've also been embraced by audiences in Japan, where they will be touring after stepping off the Barrymore stage. dumate Dumate have had a big year in Madison. They formed as a collaboration between members of Natty Nation and local hip-hop star Peter Parker, then added the ubiquitous Nick Moran to hold down the low-end. Dumate didn't waste any time with their debut album dumate rite, one of the very best local releases of 2005. Mama Digdown's Brass Band My own crew, Mama Digdown's Brass Band, introduced the New Orleans style to Madison over twelve years ago and haven't slowed down since. Over the past year, they made their European debut at the Ascona Jazz Festival and played a number of post-hurricane benefits and tours with/for New Orleans musicians. Rob Dz Experience Rob Dz' brand of live hip-hop focuses on a positive message and a lot of soul. Led by rapper Dz and drummer/musical director Rick Flowers, the band released their debut album Soul Anthems to a warm critical reception this year. El Clan Destino Afro-Cuban renegades El Clan Destino will be kicking off the show. Led by Nick Moran and featuring pianist Vince Fuh and drummers Frank Martinez and Jaime Ryan, the band has gained a reputation as one of Madison's most unique and talented bands over the past year. Their debut album is in the can and set to be released in early 2006. |
