Madtown Music Rundown, Friday June 3, 2005

Madonna060205.jpgBlame Madonna. A generation that grew up watching the Material Girl run around on stage in her skivvies has come of age. Nothing embodies the imprint that Michigan’s most controversial daughter left on that generation during their most impressionable years more than the current popularity of "The Underwear Party." While many attribute it to the clever guys who figured out they could get girls to take pictures of themselves in their underwear if they started a hipster website called OnlyUndiesClub.com (leading to patrons of that site to throw Only Undies theme parties), Dane101 knows better. It's Madonna.

Madison has fully embraced the Underwear Party. We wrote about it back in the early days of this website, and even RuPaul plans to acknowledge our thriving underwear scene with a visit on July 15 at the Orpheum Theatre on State.

Can't wait that long to shed all but your most intimates? Then stop by Café Montmarte for UNDERWEAR: The Party at 9 p.m. Friday. The Mad Rollin' Dolls are hosting, and serving up shots on skates in their undies. Some proceeds of the cover go to benefit the AIDS Network.

Luther's Blues is bringing to town the spiritual messages of Bay Area's Zion I. The trio will be joined by ONE.BE.LO of the Hieroglyphics and Souls of Mischief. The Crown City Rockers and Rob Dz Experience will also be picking up the mic. Doors open at 8 p.m.

It's the first Friday of the month, so that means it's time for "Spoil" at the Inferno. This month Spoil features the drum and bass stylings of UFO!, the rocking dance magic of Awesome Car Funmaker and DJ Anonymous vs. DJ Sunshine, as well as Napoleon vs. Pedro. Show starts at 9 p.m.

Glass Nickel on Atwood promises to blow the topping off your pizza with the reunited Kites joining up with the Valkyrie riding Consequences, Locked Sound, Shinky and Vandalized Regal. Show at 9 p.m.

The Vanishing Kids will be hosting a CD release party at a show featureing The Firebird Band (featuring ex-members of Braid) and Echo-Static at the High Noon Saloon. The CD was produced by goth/industrial guru Martin Atkins.

Meanwhile, The Annex has the folky, indie, jazzy sounds of DeVotchKa. The band's latest release was named best local album of 2004 by Denver's weekly rag "Westword." They'll be joined by the "acoustic 'non-folk'" sound of Milwaukee's Wooden Robot. Doors open at 8:30 p.m., show starts at 9 p.m.

Friday also sees the start of the Isthmus Jazz Fest. Dane101 will have more later today on this free event, which kicks off at 5 p.m. in the Overture Center.

As always, we would love to write about everything happening in Madison, but there simply isn't enough time. This list is in no way a best of the best and one should always consult with The Daily Page calendar or your hipper than Dane101 friends before heading out for a night on the town. And if you are in a band and we didn't get to you this time…keep playing…we'll get you eventually.
