ijf0505.jpgExploring jazz is the order for the Overture Center this weekend. Friday and Saturday more then 25 local jazz musicians will be improvising their own interpretations of the long standing American art form at the Isthmus Jazz Festival.

Four sections of the Center will be utilized during the free two-day event, starting at 5 p.m. on Friday and wrapping up at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Some of the local acts playing include Jackie Allen Group, Tony Castaneda's Latin Jazz Sextet with Nic Cowles, Jim Erickson Trio, Mama Digdown's Brass Band and Les Thimmig 4 to name a few.

The showcase of local talent will be highlighted with a performance by Spirit Music Jamia featuring Me'Shell NdegéOcello and special guest Patricia Barber. NdegéOcello, who has played for the likes of Living Colour and John Mellencamp, was the first female artist signed to Madonna's Maverick label, and is profiled in this week's Isthmus, sponsor of the festival. She plays band leader for Spirit Music Jamia who has been described as a "powerhouse band that knows no musical boundaries."

The show is at 8 p.m. on Saturday and, no, it isn't free. Tickets are $25.
