Holy New York Style Bagels Batman!
Post by Jesse Russell on 3/7/2007 2:57pm
In my three years living in Madison I always felt one of the top 10 things the city lacked in regards to food was a solid New York style bagel shop. In just a few weeks Madison may be getting just that (taste, smell, and visual tests will be required to verify if they truly are New York Style). Anyone who frequents the Mercury Cafe, Bartell Theatre, or Cafe Montmartre has probably noted all of the coming and goings at the store front formerly occupied by a deli. We haven't been able to get a firm opening date from any of those busy bees, but the sign went up this weekend, so we know it can't be too far off. The news of the opening of Gotham New York Bagels and Eats was actually broken by Brad over at Letters in Bottles back in January. He quoted a Business Watch article that reveals:
"Local businessman Ian Gurfield will partner with Joe Gaglio to open Gotham Bagels at 112 E. Mifflin Street in the spring of 2007. The store will also offer soups, sandwiches, and salads. Gaglio is a culinary instructor at Madison Area Technical College and Gurfield owns Ian's Pizza."
Now if only we can do something about the lack of good donuts.
Update: More information in this Cap Times article from December.
Special thanks to Cafe Montmartre's Bessie Cherry for sending in this tip and picture.

You are welcome... the guys

You are welcome... the guys across the street have been extremely secretive about whatever's going on behind those windows (that are carefully shrouded in brown paper and food magazine clippings). But yesterday, when I saw the sign, I corralled Joe for a second and he said they're hoping to open sometime around the end of this month. As of today, they've added neon signs that say: "Espresso," "Hot Bagels," and "Pastrami" which are all things that I truly love. Also, Joe insists that NY bagels are "not about the water" in NYC and he seems to know the real deal... including everything about my favorite hometown bagel shop, Barrington Bagel Co. Therefore, he rocks.
