hookscheese0628.jpgHooks Cheese Company cheesemaker Tony Hook has been making cheese for 35 years and been selling it at the DCFM for 12 years. It all started back in 1970 when Tony Hook began apprenticing at a small cheese factory in Barneveld and got his cheesemakers licnese in 1972.

In 1976 Tony and his wife Julie formed Hook's Cheese Company in rural Mineral Point. They started off with Wisconsin's signature cheese, Cheddar and soon expanded their cheese empire to include the cheeseships of Colby, Monterey Jack and his neighbor, Marble Jack.

One highlight of Tony Hook's career came in 1982. As their brochure explains,

Quote:
In 1982 our entry of Colby won the "Best of Class award in the World Cheese Championship. It was then judged against the winners of all the other classes and it was judged the "Finest Cheese in the World" out of 482 entries. There were entries from fourteen states and sixteen countries!

As time went on, Hook's Cheese Company experienced substantial growth and in 1987, having outgrown their rural Mineral Point cheese factory, they moved to a larger facility in the city of Mineral Point.

Hook's Cheese Company's booth is located on Pinckney Street across the street from the US Bank Plaza near the East Washington intersection. Owner Tony Hook said that business has been very good this year and that they are breaking sales records.

Some of the most popular items are the cheese curds, of course, as well as the 5 year sharp cheddar and the Danish style blue. Their most unique cheese is called Tilston Point, an English blue cheese inspired by the English that settled in and around the Mineral Point area.

If you are unable to make it to the Farmers Market, you can order their cheese by phone by calling (608) 987-3259.
