Echodropping Geek.Kon: Where do you think you are?

Festival | Geek-Kon 2007

furry.jpgThe bride and groom who were married at Pres House at approximately 1 pm this afternoon will not be lacking intriguing background scenery for the pictures they were snapping outside the church. To their left, Logarhythm was rocking out on Library Mall surrounded by bobbing heads and "Legalize It" banners. To their right, a steady stream of eager costume-clad, tail-wagging geeks headed towards the Humanities Building, computers, swords, and robots (yep, I saw a robot on a leash) in tow.

We were told at the registration table that the turnout was already creeping over 1000 registrants-- far more than the potential 200 that Kon planners had envisioned back in February. Way to go! This is sure to be a boon to Madison in the future. More to come about Geek.Kon, but we'll leave you with this choice echodrop:

(spoken in confused tone)"So, I'm walking around and I see this guy in a Badger shirt and I'm like, 'Huh? why would you be wearing a Badger shirt?' And he looks at me and says, 'Do you even know where you are?'" The girl who said this was incredulous, and she was wearing a pale blue belted tunic with white symbols on each arm... I don't know who she was dressed as, but, well, let's just say she didn't look like she was from around here.

Speaking of Badgers, Art Paul Schlosser was playing to a crowd a couple hundred strong outside State Street Brats. Sorry, Art, their backs were towards you. The crowd was taking advantage of this 86-degree October afternoon to cheer on the UW Badger football team on Brats' ingenious outdoor flat screen. Unfortunately, the Badgers broke their impressive winning streak by bending to the Illini 31-19.

Maybe the UW team should head over to Humanities and channel their aggression into some LARP.
