Dane101.com to be archived January, 27, 2014

It is with a heavy heart that we the editors have made the difficult decision to suspend Dane101.com. The site will be archived on January 27, 2014 after the Dane101 event Fire Ball VI: Gods and Monsters. The plan is that the site will remain up and data available for as long as we can continue to host it.
Dane101 started in 2005 as a “collaborative news and arts blog for Madison and Dane County, Wisconsin.” In 2005, YouTube had yet to launch, Facebook was still for college students only, and a tweet was merely the noise a bird made. That is not to say Dane101 didn’t find a place in the media landscape -- in fact, it has filled a void and provided much-needed local news and arts coverage and a forum for local voices. The reach of Dane101 has grown out from the original blog format to include local content sharing partnerships, sponsorships, and live events.
During the 2011 Wisconsin Act 10 protests, Dane101became one of the primary outlets for disseminating news of what was happening on the ground via written word reporting, photography, videos, and social networks. According to Google Analytics, site traffic increased by 86.7 percent in 2011 vs. 2010. To put it in perspective, we had nearly 350,000 unique visits in 2010. Between January 1, 2011 and June 1, 2011 we received more than 430,000 unique visits.
Over the years, efforts were made on many fronts to create a self-sustaining model which would provide revenue while protecting our underlying values. But, due to another number of factors, this failed to happen.
All of us feel grateful for what we have been able to accomplish, and sorry for what we have not. As so many good things, we have struggled to find the right time to let it go.
Many of you have been with us throughout these struggles and helped us through the challenges. We welcome any comments you may have as we close this chapter. Over the next few months, we plan to share new content as well as revisit some of our past contributor’s favorite memories.
Thanks to everyone who has been and continues to be a part of Dane101.
