WI-SEN: Hovde makes $1.5 million ad buy; Edges Thompson in PPP poll

Somewhere in Wisconsin there's a guy who loves seeing political ads on television more than any other programming. The last two years inside Wisconsin's perpetual election machine has been the greatest two years of his life and as the November elections approach he's installing Clockwork Orange eye spreaders so he doesn't miss a second of advertising. Political eye candy, yum.

Republican Senate candidate Eric Hovde is leading the charge in advance of the August 14 primary. According to Hotline On Call the Madison-based multimillionaire has made a $1.5 million ad buy in a bid to boost his name recognition around the state.

The ad buy comes in advance of a new poll from Public Policy Polling that the organization says will show Hovde with a slight edge over former Governor Tommy Thompson in the battle to represent Republicans on the ticket. PPP says Hovde seems to be getting the wind in his sails from the Tea Party with whom he leads 39-21.

Hovde's ad dollars even outspend a number of SuperPAC's that have made winning the Wisconsin Senate race a priority.

Americans for Prosperity started pumping $400,000 into the state in June with an ad directed toward Democratic Senate candidate Rep. Tammy Baldwin. That ad is now being complimented by an ad buy from the newest SuperPAC on the block, American Commitment, which has invested $500,000 on behalf of the group's anonymous donors.
