Watch out Walgreens...CVS coming to Madison

Current | Money

logo_cvs.gifIt looks like the convenience/pharmacy chain wars are about to heat up. A meeting was held last night at Holy Cross Lutheran Church on Milwaukee Street to discuss a proposal by CVS to locate a pharmacy at Union Corners (the corner of E Wash and Milwaukee St). It would be the first Madison area CVS. Walgreens and CVS are the two largest national pharmacy chains having approximately the same number of stores.kscan_0002.jpg

awesome! finally some sort

yes! finally some sort of competition.

Community pharmacy doesn't

Community pharmacy doesn't count as competition? Are there any small business pharmacies in Madison?

As a coastie

I grew up with only CVS around me as the small independent pharmacies were pushed out or bought out. That said, CVS has always felt cleaner to me then the Walgreens out here in the Midwest.

independent pharmacies

To hell with them both. Downtown, there's the wonderful Community Pharmacy. On the West side, there's Neuhauser on Monroe Street. On the East side, there's Shaeffer on Willy.

In this particular instance, CVS wants to open a store at Union Corners, a half-block from an existing Walgreen's, hardly a boon to an area that needs so much more. But the McGraths have been unsuccessful at luring a grocery store, and the condo market has tanked. It's hard to ask them to continue to take losses until they find the ideal tenant. I just hope that the construction will be solid and attractive enough that something else can go there some day.

Seconding all of this. Does

Seconding all of this.

Does Mallat's on Monroe count, too? I'm pretty sure they still have some pharmacy functions in addition to all the awesome costume stuff. :)

That style of development is

That style of development is so frustrating. I understand the attraction for the retailer, since an area that supports a Walgreens is somewhere they know there's business that they can try to take away. But it's not good for communities.

I get everything I can from local stores (pharmacy, grocery, hardware, you name it). In capitalism, there's no better way to vote than with your wallet.

community pharmacy

I'm partial to community pharmacy myself, especially for their excellent sexual health (condom & lube) selection. :-)

Middleton CVS

There are plans to open a CVS in Middleton on Century/Allen in the coming months, too.

And WORD on supporting local pharmacies.

CVS the bomb yo!!

My job entails working with pharmacies all across Wisconsin and I can tell you CVS has their shit together. This is good news for Madison.
