Our house, in the middle of the Google Street

google-street.jpgStudents moving to Madison this fall will have a new way to check out the city before they arrive.

Yesterday, Google launched “Street View” as part of Google Maps for Madison. An address search in Google Maps now provides a picture of the area and the specific location.

Street View is designed to give a panoramic 360-degree view of a city at ground level. Pictures are taken by a camera mounted to the top of a car.

“The imagery is typically between a couple months and a year old at the time of launch,” said Elaine Filadelfo of Google in an email.

Madison was one of 13 new metropolitan areas announced yesterday. Others include Austin, Cleveland, and Little Rock.

Holy crap!

I've been hoping for this in Madison for a while. I didn't think we'd get it so soon. This is going to make shopping for apartments that have no photos a little better. It's going to make giving directions to people bad with directions easier. This is really cool.

Hey, that's me!

Back in November or so, my dad was visiting & we were driving on the beltline behind a car with a big Google sign on top and a fancy camera-looking rig. "Hey,", I said, "I'll bet they're doing imagery for Street View."

And waddayaknow. There we are. (If you zoom the Street View out and click on the arrows you can follow us all the way from Midvale to Mineral Point).

My mind? Just blown!

I just "walked" from Michelangelo's to my apartment to the Plaza. All too realistic.

Makes it so much easier

to go for a leisurely stroll around the block.

Co-worker found himself

...drinking a beer in his driveway. He was supposedly doing some home improvement work. Busted.

my house and car

For some reason, my house and street being in this don't get me at all, but my car and motorcycle really weirded me out. Especially since I don't even own that car any more.

Dates

I just checked out the Barrymore and the date on front is July 28. The Orpheum has the Bangles playing, I think on August 30.

moving day

The number of couches on the curb of East Johnson make me figure they hit that around Moving Day.

google maps

Google is still light years ahead of any other search engines.

The google maps are being used on TV. I have seen google earth on cnn too .
