Google Trends: Huckabee and Obama surge in Wisconsin Google searches

Current | Politics

democrats010808.jpgWhen last we brought you a look at how Wisconsinites are trending in the Presidential Google searches the Democrat side showed Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and John Edwards with tight trend lines and the Republicans barely worth mentioning with the exception of Ron Paul.

How things have changed now that we are in the New Year and on the other side of the Iowa Caucus. Obama has surged substantially in Wisconsinite Google searches while Clinton and Edwards are running neck-and-neck. On the Republican side Mike Huckabee has surpassed Google searches for Paul and has left all of the other contenders in the dust. Mitt Romney is the only one receiving enough Google searches in our state to even appear on the trend graph. In fairness, Fred Thompson did make a blip when he announced last year, but has since dropped off the graph.

republicans010808.jpgWhen broke down by regions within Wisconsin Paul continues to be the most Googled in the top three. However, Eau Claire seems to be a solid stronghold for McCain while Romney is pretty much running neck-and-neck with Huckabee in Milwaukee and Madison.

On the Democrat side Edwards continues to show strong Google support (whatever that means) in Wisconsin Rapids, Wausau, and Stevens Point. Meanwhile, Clinton and Obama have tightened up as compared to the last time we checked in Madison and Milwaukee. Clinton holds onto a healthy lead in Middleton, Appleton, and La Crosse.

There hasn't been a poll done in Wisconsin since December 5. At that time Clinton held a solid lead with 39-percent, followed by Obama with 26-percent, and Edwards with 15-percent. That same poll showed Rudy Giuliani in the lead on the Republican side with 25-percent, McCain with 15-percent, Huckabee with 8-percent, and Romney with 5-percent. It also had Fred Thompson at 30-percent, but I think that is an outlier because we don't know if the pollster was only going by last names. If so, then people may have been confused and thought they were being polled for former Governor Tommy Thompson who has dropped out of the race.

It is worth noting that the poll numbers are inconsistent with fundraising numbers in the state. As of September Obama led the pack in fundraising Wisconsin wide. He had $394,816 in donations followed by McCain with $126,208, Romney with $122,066, Clinton with $119,730, Edwards with $116,122, and Giuliani with $57,250. The numbers for the last quarter should be available soon.
