24hrmadisonimg.jpg24 Hour Madison is a great resource for insomniacs, students who are up late studying, or anyone who is looking for something to do/eat/drink/smoke in the wee hours of the morning. This site comes in very handy when you need SPECIAL ITEM X and it's after midnight, or when you are locked out of your apartment and your landlord's "24 hour maintenance" service answering machine message that promised to call you back within 10 minutes has left you freezing on the street for several hours.

Site description (in their words): This is your guide to all Madison area businesses that accommodate the night life. Our city isn't exactly overflowing with all night businesses, but look around, you will see there are restaurants serving, gas stations with the lights on, vast grocery stores, and health clubs with steam rooms all awaiting you in the 24 Hour Madison. Plus taxi cabs aplenty to get you there!

The good: Offers a categorized directory of businesses that are open late at night. Special icons by a listing indicate hours (24-hours, open till 3, etc), location, and type of service offered.

The bad: Nothing, really. It is a simple, well-designed site that serves its purpose.

24 Hour Madison proprietor, Chris Coyier created the site because he started working 3rd shift and was having trouble coping with the lack of information for people who need to live like vampires.

Quote:
On a day off, I might leave the house at 11pm to try to and find something to do or something to eat and it was near futile. Eventually I started to keep a mental list of the 24 hour establishments around town. They are few and far between, but there are enough to make a life lived at night possible.

The site offers a few interactive features too including user comments and a Google Maps based map with the locations of the businesses and services listed in the directory.

24 Hour Madison is a clever idea. Its simplicity and good execution ensures that it will be a handy resources for students and night-owls alike.
