Madison Google Trends: Cheese, brats, derby, Ann Coulter, and more

Current | Technology

googletrends051507.gifI had my fingers crossed when I entered the words "cheese" and "brats" into Google's newest toy, Google Trends, that I wouldn't find the stereotypical results. The hope was that Vermont would land at number one for "cheese" and, I don't know, some German city would clock in at number one for "brats." Nope. Madison sits hefty at number one for people searching for either "cheese" or "brats" (for the record, if I enter "bratwurst" we come in at number four under the three German cities of Erfurt, Nuremberg, and Bielefeld).

I was inspired to check the trends after FOX 9 in the Twin Cities did a Google Trend on searches for "beer" and found Madisonians to be the number one searchers for that word. They explain the way Google Trends" works:

Quote:
# Google first looks at a sample of all Google searches to determine the cities that received the most searches for the keyword.

# Then, for those top cities, Google calculates the ratio of searches for the keyword coming from each city divided by total Google searches coming from the same city.

We also rank high in a number of other searches.

Milwaukee narrowly beats us out for the top spot in searches for the word "bubbler."

For "roller derby" we clock in at number three, below Austin and Tucson, but well above Minneapolis who barely make it into the top ten at number eight (take that Minnesota Roller Girls!).

We are second only to Cleveland in searches for the word "progressive."

The phrase "Farmer's Market" lands a healthy number four (Santa Barbara and Portland, Ore. take the top two slots and Madison is sandwiched between Raleigh, N.C. and San Francisco).

Searches for "Bicycle," "Frank Lloyd Wright," "Capitol Square," "Stephanie Miller," "Wisconsin," "Badger," and "Firefly" all put us at number one.

Both "Stephen Colbert" and "John Stewart" put us at number nine.

And, interestingly, for "Ann Coulter" we clock in at number three and for "Bill O'Reilly" we land at number five.

Firefly is all you

This post is evidence of someone with too much time on their hands. Also, if GoogleTrends rankings are a measure of what Madisonians are Googling based on number of searches coming from our fair city, then we have YOU to thank for our #1 ranking under the term "Firefly".

Also, since the first qualifier looks for a bulk number of searches, would that boost the rankings for cities with tech-savy people (or google-dependent surfers), such as Madison?

liberal

Very odd. I swear I tried "liberal" earlier today and we weren't even in the top 10. Maybe I spelled it wrong.

lol

Great comment. I wonder where we rank for x-rated search terms?

okay, now I'm hooked

We came up number 3 under St. Paul and Minneapolis for the term "block party", so all the troublemakers on Mifflin Street were from Minnesota after all. I'll save the x-rated terms for after-work hours.

Guess what.

If you google "Madison Google Trends" Dane101 is #1.

joHn stewart

Someone contacted me on Facebook and told me I spelled "Jon Stewart" wrong and if I spelled it right Madison would rank number 6 for searches of the Daily Show host. That's assuming when I searched "John Stewart" I didn't actually mean the John Stewart who has served as the Green Lantern of Sector 2814.

Right wing hummer dealership?

I know this is the wrong place for this but since everyone is conversing here I figured it would be ok. So I see the Hummer dealership near fish hatchery & the beltline has their ginormous American flag at half-staff presumably in memory of Jerry Fallwell or whatever. Is that a violation of the flag code. I read some websites but they have been unclear on this. Also, they flew their flag at half-staff for like a month and a half after Reagan died...way longer than anyone else in town. What gives? Can they fly it at half-staff whenever they feel like it? Can I fly my flag at half-staff when my cats die?

Nope

I used my super reporter skills and just called them up. Stephanie says they are flying at half-mast for Memorial Day. They start it now, apparently?, and continue until shortly after Memorial Day. See, it's actually Memorial Week-and-a-Half.

Correction: Peace Officers Memorial Day, which was yesterday...but whatever.

They also fly flags at half

They also fly flags at half staff for my birthday. The also occasionally hold parades.

Do you think we could come

Do you think we could come up with a psychological profile of the prototypical Madisonian based on our Google Trend research?

DSV-5

It would probably be a healthier psychological profile than one based on the obsession of this post and its associated string of comments.
