A beautiful day in the neighborhood

0beautifulday.JPGI need to get out more. I left my production hole in my full time job's office building towards the campus end of State Street around 11 a.m. this morning to catch the swearing in of our new Common Council. It was a great opportunity to remind me that while I'm squirreled away digging for news nuts inside on the phone, Madison is going about business outside in the sunshine. Below are some pictures I snapped of happenings going on today as I walked.

I have a picture of Nicole Gruder decked out like Betsy Ross (or at least the Betsy Ross I imagine in my head) handing out your tax receipts for the Iraq War. A gigantic petition seeking a UW tuition freeze. Followed by the line for free ice cream at Ben and Jerry's. What a nice treat for tax day. And finally, a Mennonite handing out anti-war literature. I dig some aspects of the Mennonites (like their bulk food stores - best place to stock up on spices). Essentially the literature says Jesus wouldn't have gotten down off his cross and declared bloody war on those who put him there, so why do Christian's feel the need to constantly declare war in his name? Mennonites, for the record, are Christian Anbaptist.

At the end I added a bit of footage of outgoing Common Council President Austin King hitting back at the Wisconsin State Journal editorial board. If you read the WSJ on a regular basis you know the editorial board has been basking in an orgy of glee ever since he announced his plan to step down. Nearly ever week they run an editorial attempting to make it appear that King oversaw a do-nothing council and he is responsible for everything bad in the city including the yearly spring sprouting of potholes. No seriously, they really did blame him for the potholes - must be his lame mutant power. King has pretty much stuck to the high road and ignored the WSJ's disingenuous fixation with character assassination, so it's nice to hear him briefly address it. We'll have more footage from the swearing-in tomorrow. King's footage should load shortly. Click on images to make them larger.

T'was a nice day for a walk

I made my way from my office on the square down (up?) State to the library mall. After yesterday's horrible event at Virginia Tech, I felt the need to get on campus... walk around a little... see for myself that all's well. And it was.

I think I'll stroll down there tomorrow for the "Get Out of Iraq" rally. It will be an interesting contrast to today, but no less fulfilling.
