They Fought the Law and the Law Won

In a decision issued today, the courts upheld Madison's Inclusionary Zoning law that requires developers to include affordable housing in all new housing developments. In February, the Apartment Association of South Central Wisconsin sued the city, challenging that the law violated rent control statutes.

Mayor Dave Cieslewicz, a strong supporter of the Inclusionary Zoning law reacted:

Quote:
Affordable housing options are needed by renters just as much as by owners, if not more so. I am pleased that the court swiftly upheld our efforts to make more housing more affordable for more Madison families, whether they rent or own.
Inclusionary Zoning (IZ) is an important first step toward ensuring that all Madisonians have access to affordable housing. Unfortunately, IZ reaches only those at slightly below our median income. The city must now commit to finding solutions to the affordable housing crisis for those at lower income levels.
