Mayor Dave's Not-So-Veiled Threat to TPC

Current | Politics

Earlier today, Transit and Parking Commission members and City Council members received a lengthy memo from Mayor Cieslewicz advising the TPC to vote in favor of fare increases for Madison Metro. Actually, he didn't just advise or encourage them to vote in favor of the rate hike, he threatened further cuts to Metro's budget.

Quote:
I want to be clear: if you do not vote for a fare increase, you are likely to see an executive budget in the fall with perhaps as much as a 3% cut in Metro’s $8.3 million city subsidy. If you do vote for a fare increase, you are likely to see some reasonable, but modest, increase in that subsidy.

This memo comes from a mayor who claims to be a "great defender of Metro". Apparently, his support comes with some major strings attached.
