Attached to the email, an NPR story about the move by the Wisconsin Conservation Congress to legalize the killing of wild, free-roaming uncollared cats. It came on the heels of a similar email concerning Miss Wheelchair Wisconsin being decrowned because she was caught standing. Dane101 thought it might be fun to see what other bloggers have been saying about the cat hunting proposal. Read more below the fold: 3hive, a popular MP3 blog, thought it would be an appropriate time to post the Weakerthans song "A Plea from a Cat Named Virtue." Dane101 couldn't agree more. Skippy the Bush Kangaroo warns the state to be careful, "they might start fighting back." "Don of the Dead" over on the "let's abuse the use of the angry smiley icon" forum TheCatSite.com, believes the best way to resolve people shooting cats is with people shooting people. He says, "what ar you going to say when I a 5'9" 310lb man shows up at your door with my dead cat that YOU shot because it ate a Sparrow. Guess what? I have a gun too, and I plan on keeping my cat alive or if need be avenging his/her death, you shoot my cat, I shoot you. Thats MY law." That may be the case Don, but Judge Dredd IS the law and he seems to be the type that would support cat hunting. Left leaning poliblog First Draft encourages Democrats to adopt the meme "Democrats (Heart) Kitties" after Gov. Doyle comes out against killing of felines. On the other end of the spectrum, right leaning blog Common Sense Junction shows his "firm" grasp on Wisconsin politics by saying "State officials scheduled a state-wide “referendum” to resolve their complaint but before the actual polling could take place, lawmakers pulled a John Kerry (flip-flopped) and said the results will mean nothing." To be clear, the statewide vote was nothing more then an "advisory" vote meant to give lawmakers an idea of how the public feels. The proposal then goes to the Conservation Congress, the state Natural Resource Board and finally to the Republican controlled state House and Senate (the so-called "flip-flopping" lawmakers) and then to the desk of Gov. Doyle. It will take roughly a year. Dane101 isn't sure where CSJ came up with the idea that there was flip-flopping afoot. This Blog is Full of Crap goes right to the source and asks the cats how they feel about the proposal. Blue-eyed Infidel says "It's exactly like human racism (except obviously not as bad): some people have decided in an arbitrary manner which animals are more or less worthy of life than others, despite all objective evidence to the contrary and with a total lack of true morality." Abu Aardvark says he is filled with shame that his home state even considered such a measure. But then expresses joy when Doyle denounces the measure and calls it part of a long run of goodness coming from "the Cheesehead state: went Blue for Kerry, got UW-Milwaukee into the Sweet 16, and got a real owner for the still-first-place-if-no-longer-undefeated Milwaukee Brewers (so long, Bud Selig, don't forget to.... well, whatever it is that you do)... and now no cat killing. Almost enough to make us forget about that Green Bay-Minnesota ugliness...." The proposition has The Jawa Report asking "What does cat taste like?" and "what's the going rate for a cat pelt?" 21st Century Paladin hears about the story, thinks it is a Onion headline then asks if PETA has taken a side in the battle between "cats and birds." Then pulls out this great quote, "'Those cats are no different than someone else’s children. They’re my children,' cat owner Denise Servais said at the Brown County meeting." And finally, over on Corrente they say Doyle's opposition is encouraging because it shows "there are elected officials out there (somewhere) with a few neurons left." She's not clear on how many neurons, but Dane101 is pretty sure it's only a handful. |
