It's spring....or maybe not

Communities | Sun Prairie

IMG_1625.JPGIt's official, the rivalry between Sun Prairie's very own Jimmy the Prognosticator and Punxsutawney Phil has erupted. Thursday morning, Jimmy ushered in the prospect of an early spring by not seeing his shadow at the Sun Prairie Groundhog Day Prognostication at Cannery Square Plaza, in the heart of Sun Prairie. The event was well attended, with one "human groundhog" coming all the way from West Allis just for the celebration. This was a direct smack in the face of Phil's prediction of 6 more weeks of cold.

This feud is nothing new. Sun Prairie has been fighting to get their proper recognition as the groundhog captial of the world, even claiming congressional recognition as such(albeit the photo is next to impossible to read). NOT FOUND: 3 This rivalry doesn't seem like it will end any time soon. groundhogs.com puts this year's celebration at 120, while Sun Prairie's tops that by at least one. with a diary entry by Colonal William H. Angell on February 2nd, 1886:

Quote:
Colder 21 below at 1 a.m. Clear and cold, 2 below at 1 o'clock p.m. and 18 below at 9 p.m.

With a purported 80% accuracy, we'll see if Jimmy can give Phil a run for his money. According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, Phil's only been right 28% of the time! The site also echoes Jimmy's prediction by forcasting an "unseasonably mild" February. Heck, the sun is even coming out already, making its first showing in sevearl days, so warmer days may come sooner than we think.

Dane101 has a photostream of the event, which can be viewed here.

My money is on Jimmy

I withdrew my support from Punxsutawney Phil a few years ago. I was visiting a friend in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. on the day before Groundhog's Day and around 8 p.m. at night we decided to drive the four hours to Punxsutawney to watch Phil climb out of his hole. For some reason we imagined a raging all night party in Punxsutawney, because honestly, GROUNDHOG's DAY is their BIG DAY! We thought people would be coming from all around for the big event. No, not the case. One gym had been put aside for visitors with sleeping bags, but arriving at midnight, the gym was full. That was fine; we figured we could spend all night at the bars. No such luck. If my memory serves me right, the bars closed at 1 p.m. The streets were pretty much deserted with the exception of one drunken guy who decided he wanted to pick a fight with me because I didn't respond when he said "what's up?" Cold, sober and with no place to stay, we left Punxsutawney behind at 3 a.m. Not surprisingly, Phil did see his shadow that year, ushering in six more weeks of winter.

The moral of this story: Always trust Bill Murray.
