Meeting the Neighbors: Paul Soglin of Waxing America

Current | Neighbors

paulsoglin111207.gifNearly two years ago we started a feature called "Meeting the Neighbors." The concept is simple, we seek to promote blogging in Madison by sending the same set of 10 questions to random local bloggers. We get to know the people behind the ones and zeros a little better and, hopefully, show others how easy it is. To date we have met 17 of our neighbors and only two of them have ceased blogging since their interview. This week, after a number of months off, Meeting the Neighbors returns with former Madison Mayor Paul Soglin. His blog, Waxing America, has been at the center of many discussions involving politics nationally and right here in our own backyard. Let's meet Paul:

1. Where did the name of your blog originate from, and when did the blog start?

My brother, a journalist, had reserved it and gave it to me. November or was it October, 2005?

2. What inspired you to start your blog?

It was easier than writing letters to the editor.

3. What is the most rewarding facet of writing on the internet?

Knowing someone is reading it and pissing off Milwaukee right-wing talk radio hosts.

4. Describe the space you do your writing in.

Huh? You mean my basement office?

5. What do you do for kicks when you're not posting?

Bicycling

6. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Madison?

State Street

7. Is there one thing about the city you wish was different or something the city is missing you wish it had?

Major League Baseball Team

8. Where do you enjoy eating the most in Madison (or Dane County)?

Lots of great resturants. Sorry, I am not going to name just one, I know too many owners and they all take good care of me.

9. If you could replace the word "blog" in the cultural lexicon, what would you replace it with?

Turnip

10. Finally, name one person you wish kept a blog and what you think they would title it (can be living or dead).

Thomas Jefferson "Fixing My Mistakes"
