Forbes: Wisconsin ranks 44th for business

Current | Money

forbes2008.jpgOuch. 44? I guess there is something to be said for not being dead last like our friends in West Virginia, but still, last year we came in 39 so a five place drop is not a good thing. Mississippi, Illinois, and Pennsylvania are just three of the states that had a worse business climate in 2006 and ended up passing Wisconsin this time around. Still, it isn't all bad, we do come in eighth when it comes to quality of life. But as for everything else...not so good:

Business Costs Rank: 34

Labor Rank: 38

Regulatory Environment: 44

Economic Climate: 38

Growth Prospects: 33

How are these numbers determined? Kurt Badenhausen of Forbes explains:

Quote:
First, we look at projections of job, income and gross state product growth. We also examine venture capital money going into an area as well as new businesses that have cropped up in the past three years. Another addition is the role that government plays on the business climate in terms of environmental and labor laws, as well as taxes and incentives. These factors play out on the state level instead of on the local level. Overall, we examine 32 criteria to assemble the list.
