Today is December 3, 2012. On this day in 1967, a surgical team headed by South African doctor Christiaan Barnard performed the world’s first human heart transplant on 53-year-old Louis Washkansky in Cape Town, South Africa. Washkansky’s new heart beat for 18 days before he died of pneumonia caused by a weakened immune system.
