Today is September 10, 2012. On this day in 2008, the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland, was powered up, and the first successful proton beams were circulated through its main ring. Nine days later, the experiment would be shut down for more than a year due to a magnet failure and ensuing helium gas explosion.
