Dane101 and Brew & View Present: Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog... with special "surprise" presentation

dr horrible.jpgA man's gotta do what a man's gotta do and dane101 has to do what dane101 has to do: host a special Brew and View Sing-A-Long on February 11 at the Majestic Theatre featuring Joss Whedon's instant Internet sensation, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Doors at 8 p.m. and Dr. Horrible will start at 9 p.m.

The 43-minute musical, one of TIME Magazine's Top 50 Inventions of 2008, follows Dr. Horrible (played by Neil Patrick Harris) as he tries to balance his pursuit of Penny, the girl of his dreams, his attempt to join the Evil League of Evil, and his ongoing struggle with his arch-nemesis, Captain Hammer (played by Nathan Fillion). Does he get the girl? Does he prove his worth to the League? Does he defeat Captain Hammer? You probably already know the answers to these questions, but you should come have them answered again with an audience of your closest friends.

But dane101, you may now ask, how will you possibly make a night out of one, 43-minute feature? Glad you asked! We will be featuring a Whedon specific quiz where you get show off your knowledge of all things Buffy, Firefly, Angel, and Horrible (and maybe a question or two about Dollhouse--which doesn't actually premiere until February 13--just to mess with you). We will also be hosting a Whedonverse costume contest where we encourage…nay…implore you to mimic your favorite Whedonverse characters throughout the evening for the chance to win glorious prizes at the end of the night. But, most importantly, we will be showing a very special, surprisingly surprise feature to end the evening.

Again you may wish to ask a question and that question is likely "What could this surprisingly surprising feature to end the evening possibly be?" We could say, but that would be telling. For all you know, it could be bunnies.

We promise, however, not to make any bears.

There is a small $3 entry fee to this event, but all proceeds will be donated to Whedon's favorite charity, Equality Now!

YES!

Yay!

Coolieo

Beyond awesome. I hope to be there.

woohoo!

oh hells yeah!!! i am there.

And Rick makes some enemies

I didn't like Dr. Horrible that much and Buffy sucks.

Look, I tried to like Dr. Horrible. I liked Neil Patrick Harris' charmingly sincere portrayal, and I liked some of the early jokes. But when he started singing the love song, I was bored as hell. The love song wasn't the least bit funny from what I saw (I stopped watching partway through). With a concept that ridiculous, you can't sell your love story seriously. I should never be bored during a comedy or musical!

I even tried to like Buffy. All my friends were into it, which is part of the reason it failed for me. They talked it up so damn much it couldn't survive the hype. Also, it makes no goddamn sense if you don't watch all the episodes start to finish, and the early episodes weren't good enough to justify that.

Because of these things I've avoided watching Firefly, which I think I might have actually liked had everything else not failed for me.

Also, since I'm already making enemies, let's go all out: Joss sucks and you all suck!!!11!!1!!! LOL!!1!!!

I agree, but...

I feel your pain. For almost a decade I had to listen to all of my friends drone on and on about how wonderful Buffy was, and how Angel wasn't too shabby either. I gave them both a few watches and genuinely tried to like them but never found either show funny or entertaining. When Firefly came out and the same people were gushing over it I figured it was just blind Joss love and ignored them.

Then I buckled and finally watched Firefly. Damn was it good.

I think it all came down to the fact that I hate the vampires/demons/supernatural genre but love me some sci-fi. If you have any interest whatsoever in science fiction, give Firefly a shot. If you don't like it, well, thanks to Fox canceling it, it's conveniently short!

Dr. Horrible is... different. I loved the concept and all the characters (hell, I dressed as the good Dr. for Halloween) but some of it is a bit hard to swallow. But what can you really expect in a musical about an evil supergenius who is trying to impress a girl and a horse at the same time?

I wholeheartedly agree, I

I wholeheartedly agree, I tried watching Buffy and Angel and I'll be damned if I didn't think it was horrible. I was however lucky enough that none of my friends were fans; we were more Twin Peaks people who thought the Buffy crowd were fat, lonely, geeks who dressed up in vampire garb in their mother's basement.

There now I have taken the enemy pressure off of you Rick, consider it a late Christmas present.

You guys done wanking off

You guys done wanking off yet? ;)

Actually, I didn't watch Buffy at all until 5th season, when I lived with a bunch of people who were really into it. It was the episode called "The Body" that hooked me. That was some fine, fine storytelling.

But hey, if it ain't your thing, it ain't your thing. Why rag on it?

I rag on it because I am an

I rag on it because I am an asshole Emily.

WTF

Rick, I'm editing you out of the podcast.

The songs in Dr. Horrible get better as they go along. Buffy also improves greatly from season to season, and has some of the best character jokes/development of any series. You could probably skip the first season or so and not be too lost. But anyway, Firefly is short (damn Fox) so you should give that a try. It's not the Second Coming, but it is entertaining. I can understand people not liking Whedon's dialogue, but he does come up with interesting characters.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes,

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes...

Yes, it's a great idea... I'll be there flying my browncoat colors... rrr, brown, I guess. I never much got into the Buffyverse myself.

If you're looking for ways

If you're looking for ways to make a longer night out of it, perhaps after trivia you could show "Commentary: The Musical!" for those of us who haven't purchased the DVD.

You should purchase the DVD.

DAMN! Wednesday! I'm in Minneapolis, and I would MAKE THAT DRIVE.

Does anyone have a sense if

Does anyone have a sense if this is going to sell out? I can't be there until after 8pm and don't want to bother coming down town if it is hopeless.

Honestly, Dar

I have no real sense. Facebook has 103 "confirmed guests" but that is never a reliable gauge.
