Notes On A Screen: Madison Area Film, TV, and Gaming News 2008: Week 20

Arts | Film | Television | Gaming

smallpublicenemies.jpgWe haven't produced a "Notes On A Screen" since the week of the Wisconsin Film Festival, apologies. We blame complete silver screen burnout. With all of the hoopla regarding Public Enemies being filmed around the Capitol earlier this week this seems like the best time to fire up the weekly round-up of TV, gaming, and film news coming out of the greater Madison metropolitan area.

Johnny Depp wasn't in town for this shoot of what has come to be known simply as P.E., but Christian Bale and Billy Crudup did strut up the steps of the Capitol building as Madison doubled for Hoover's fledgling FBI headquarters. Bale is playing Melvin Purvis, who was Dillinger's pursuer, while Crudup is portraying the young Hoover. The results are photos and coverage galore.

The Daily Page had by far the most extensive local coverage of the shoot including interesting photos of the production taken from an elevated perch. They have a special page just for P.E. coverage.

However, The Daily Cardinal scooped everyone when they scored the only interview we could find locally with director Michael Mann. The UW alum talked about his time in Madison as a film student.

Here on dane101, Phil provided us with some fascinating black and white photos of the extras decked out in period dress.

Meanwhile, the 48-Hour Film Project is coming to Madison and challenging local filmmakers to create a film in only 48 hours. Impossible! Oh wait, maybe not so much: Wis-Kino has been hosting 48-Hour Guerrilla Kabarets since 2002 so this competition should be a walk in the park for local filmmakers. Even Dane101 entered the most recent 48 hour kabaret. We are actually surprised the 48 Hour Film Project makes zero mention on their website of Wis-Kino. Hmmm...

In related-to-film film news, Sundance plans to reopen their roof top bar for the summer on May 12. If you have never been to the Sundance rooftop bar it is a unique open air Madison treat. It is open until midnight every night except Sundays when it closes at 10 p.m.

And speaking of rooftops and cinema, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art will be bringing back Rooftop Cinema starting the first Friday of June.

On the gaming side of things, will Middleton-based Ravensoft have a piece of the just-revealed, in-progress Doom 4? According to Gamasutra, id Software will be developing the project internally, but they have "traditionally worked with publisher Activision but has not announced a partner for either Rage or Doom 4, and has confirmed in the past it has no existing exclusivity agreements." The company previously worked with Ravensoft on Quake 3.

48-Hour Film Project.

Y'know, I've got no problem with another 48-hour filmmaking challenge in town--the more the merrier, and all that--but I still don't get how they justify charging a $135/155 entry fee. Wis-Kino's Kabarets are free. I get that the 48HFP offers prizes and glory or whatever, but still, that's a lot of dough.
