Before long, it escalated. A classic arcade on the north side. A Jonathan Coulton concert. Geek.Kon. Madison geeks had made their presence known. This weekend when the Wisconsin Film Festival hits Madison, geekiness will be well represented. Six movies focus on geek values or ideas. This got me thinking; is geekiness becoming socially acceptable, or is this just part of a large geek conspiracy to take over the city? I emailed Meg Hamel, Director of the film festival to get some answers. Did the geek community pressure you to picking more films that discuss their lifestyle? Are you prepared for a "geek swarm" on Madison? Is local law enforcement standing by and ready? No answer from Ms. Hamel. She’s probably extremely busy with the festival this week. Or maybe they got to her… I for one welcome and embrace our new geek overlords. Therefore, here is a list of the geeky titles appearing this year at the Wisconsin Film Festival. Big Man Japan. Thursday, April 3rd 9:45p.m. Orpheum Main Theater. Geek connection – Superhero movie. A mockumentary about a Japanese superhero that derives his power from a large bust of electricity. The unmotivated protagonist Daisato deals with citizens that complain about the mess he makes, and an agent that sells sponsorships across his chest. Ben X. Friday, April 4th 6:45p.m. Orpheum Main Theater Geek connection – MMORPG Ben is tired of being picked on by bullies at school, so he immerses himself in the online roll playing game Archlord. An in-game friend helps him deal with real-life problems. In Search of a Midnight Kiss. Sunday, April 6th 11:00a.m. Orpheum Main Theater. Geek connection – online dating. Online dating is more mainstream and carries less of a geek stigma then a decade ago (as one can tell by viewing the main characters of this movie). In a new town and looking for a New Years date, Wilson turns to Craigslist. The Pixar Story. Saturday, April 5th 11:00a.m. Union Theater. Geek connection – computer animation. Pixar created some of the highest-grossing movies of the last decade. This documentary looks at the people behind the animation. Welcome to Macintosh. Sunday, April 6th 1:45p.m. Chazen Museum of Art. Geek connection – computer. “Apple has essentially changed the world, weather you know it or not,” says co-director Josh Rizzo. “They have affected everything we use that is vaguely computer related.” Welcome to Macintosh discusses Mac history, as well as the “Cult of Mac.” Nerdcore for Life. Saturday, April 5th 11:15p.m. Bartell Theater. Geek connection – music. “Bitches better fear the nerd revolution.” The King of geek movies at the Wisconsin Film Festival this year. This documentary focuses on the trend of geek rappers – singing about topics from Dungeons & Dragons to computers. Nerdcore for Life makes its world premiere at the Wisconsin Film Festival. Disclaimer – The author of this article is a really big geek, and plans to see most, if not all of these movies. He also enjoys most of the items mentioned in this article. He still welcomes the new geek overlords; assuming for some reason he is not one of them. |
