"There’s something there that the creators put into the Macintosh where it has personality. It’s fun, and it’s real," says Josh Rizzo. "It’s not like it’s just an inanimate computer." Rizzo and Rob Baca are long-time Macintosh users and friends. The pair co-directed the film "Welcome to Macintosh," which will make its world premier at the Wisconsin Film Festival Sunday, April 6. The film idea came to Baca while shoveling his driveway in Columbus, Ohio – a movie about Macintosh for non-geeks. "I wished there was a movie that would encapsulate what it’s like to be a Mac user, why we are Mac users, what the challenges have been," says Rizzo. Rizzo says the goal was to "make a film that you can show to a Windows person, or someone that has never really used a computer, and they’ll understand the concepts, they’ll understand the emotions, they’ll understand why without necessarily knowing what they’re about to sit down and watch." "It’s fun; it’s an upbeat story," says Baca. While the movie takes a brief look at the history of Macintosh and Apple, it also discusses the consumers, and the "cult of Macintosh." "Being a Mac person through the 90s was kinda like explaining why you had to have an arrow sticking through your head, and that it was ok, just don’t touch it," says Rizzo. "It was a very difficult experience." Baca and Rizzo say their movie was created with 100-percent Apple software and hardware (with the exception of Photoshop). Even this interview was conducted using iChat, a Macintosh instant messaging program. "Apple has essentially changed the world, weather you know it or not," says Rizzo. "They have affected everything we use that is vaguely computer related." Baca and Rizzo plan to attend the premier April 6th. Tickets are still available through the Wisconsin Film Festival website at wifilmfest.org. "Welcome to Macintosh, welcome to this experience," says Rizzo. "Lets introduce you to it if you’ve never seen it, and lets reminisce if you have." |
