Breakin' the Law

Breakin
The fourth annual Breakin' the Law breakdancing competition took place this past Saturday in the Memorial Union's Great Hall. Coordinated by Jarius King, aka ManOfGod, and the Multi-Cultural Student Coalition, the event featured breakers and DJs from all over the world. There were people from as close as La Crosse and people from China, Tokyo, and the Dominican Republic, as well as a DJ from Switzerland.

King recently told Madison Magazine of the Madison hip-hop scene, "Since there's no strong hip-hop scene here in Madison, the only thing these kids have access to is MTV, BET and commercial hip hop. They haven't really experienced the hip-hop community." If your idea of Madison hip-hop is a cheesy video of a stretch hummer on Allied Drive, then you should check out the Breakin' the Law event next year, or any of the events scheduled for the rest of Hip-Hop as a Movement Week.
